I read your posting to roots web and was wondering if there is a connection to my elijah barton brown who was born in cayauga county in 1823, his fathers name was also joseph and mothers name was clarrissa, i know there was a lot of joseph's but was just wondering if there could be a connection? [email protected] wrote: Was your Joseph married to an Anna? Maybe Anna Barton? As I mentioned in an earlier email, the Joseph I have, and probably is the same as the one who was married to Lucy Spencer..as she died in 1821. He then married Anna and had Joseph A., b. 1825 and Sally. Perhaps your Elijah was their first born? Both Josephs were born in 1770 and lived in the same area...bet they are one and the same people. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. I ran into this citation for the Medal of Honor, there were other Brown's who received it also, just google Medal of Honor and you will get alphabetical listing of all who received the medal. In looking for Mary Jane Brown's family after finding her with her siblings and father and mother in Jasper, Wayne County, Illinois in 1870 I was wrong to say the father must have died and the family split up before 1880. I have found the whole family in Posey County, Indiana in the 1880 census which is not all that far from Wayne County, Illinois. Karen
I found Mary Jane's parents yesterday and forwarded you all kinds of census listings and one WW1 draft listing from Ancestry privately. Did you not receive them? I found Mary Jane listed as Mary I. Brown with her parents in Jasper Township, Wayne County, Illinois in the 1870 census and that Andrew must have died between 1870 and 1880 as the family is split apart in the 1880 census. Found the mother and Mary Jane living in different households working for families. Also found Mary Jane's two sons by her first marriage ended up in Montana and lived next door to each other in the 1930 census. Also found Mary Jane's father in the 1850 census. The key was that both of her parents were born in Kentucky. She had one sister Rachel, born about 1864, a brother William E. born about 1861 and a brother Milton born about 1859. In 1910 the Bowlds children are in the household of Charles R. Bowlds in Wayne county ILL listed as niece and nephews. I also found WWI registration for both William Earl was in Montana Park county and Carl was in Story county IA at the time they registered. I know this does not answer your question as to Andrew Brown and Rachel but they are also descendants and older, perhaps descendants would know more. Another line to work on. Does the 1900 census say where her parents were born or if you don't have access I will look it up. You have made me curious. The thing is about middle names, sometimes the census taker got it wrong. Or she could just be listed as Mary Brown on the census. Her father's place of birth would really help.
