    2. Betsy Wildes
    3. Most of this information is proven, but not all. Any help finding the parents of George is greatly appreciated. Betsy It is believed the parents of George Brown came from Maryland with the Catholic Migration, about 1790. We base this assumption on these facts. 1) George said his parents were born in Maryland on the 1880 Hart County, Kentucky census. 2) The family was Catholic based on the baptism records of George’s family found on the ST. Catherine’s Catholic Church records, in New Haven in Nelson County, Kentucky. 3) This is a stretch to base an assumption on but true nonetheless, George married Juliet Ann Lush, daughter of William Lush and Elizabeth Greenwell. We know this line of Greenwell’s were Catholic because Elizabeth was the sponsor for several baptisms at St. Catherine’s George was born about 1812, in Nelson County, Kentucky, according to his son Hillary. He stated on one of his marriage certificates that his father was born in Nelson Co, KY. He died between 15 June 1880 and June 1900, place on unknown, based on the Kentucky Federal Census, (the 1890 census being lost to fire is the reason for such a big time span). He married Juliet Ann Lush on 15 February 1836 in Hardin County, Kentucky. She was born about 1815, don't know where and don't know when she died. She was the daughter of William Lush and Elizabeth Greenwell. Their children were: Margaret A. born 1840 Kentucky Catherine A. 1842 Kentucky Hillary (male) born 8 February 1846; died 5 Aug 1916 Kentucky Julia born 19 September 1848 baptized 5 Oct 1848 Kentucky after death James born 21 September 1848 died 7 Oct 1848 Kentucky Able born 27 February 1850 Kentucky Benjamin born 27 September 1852 Kentucky Francis born 27 September 1852 Kentucky Thomas born June 1856 Kentucky John W. born April 1860 Priceville, Hart County, Kentucky died 1910 Kentucky

Thomas Brown's will was probted in 1765 in what was then Jerusalem, but is now Courtland, in Southampton County, Virginia. The name of his wife is unknown. Dr. Jesse Browne was a prominent doctor and must have been quite willing to serve all who were sick, whether they had money to pay for his services or not. His brothers and he built a hospital at or near Jerusalem, where Doctor Jesse could and did treat those who were not able to pay. Dr. Jesse Browne had one son, Jesse, Jr., of which we have record. There was also a Daniel Brown, who was a son of one of the above, who married Patience Vick on January 16, 1783, who was the daughter of William and Martha Boykin (Or Martha Burwell) Vick. (She was the grand-daughter of William Vick, Sr., and the great-grand-daughter of Josept Vick.) Thomas Browne's children, of which we have record, were: 1. Jesse, who married Esther Stephenson, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Stephenson, Sr. Jesse made his will September 24, 1977. It was presented in court by his wife, Esther, on November 8, 1781. Their children were: A. Henry Browne B. Sally Browne C. Thomas Browne 2. Sarah Browne 3. Tabitha Browne 4. Martha Browne, who married James Allen A. Henry Browne, son of Jesse Browne, born in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1764 moved to Wake County, North Carolina, where he married Lucy Womack (daughter of Benjamin Womack), who was born in 1769 and died in Wake County, December 3, 1844. They were married about 1789. Henry Browne died in Wake County, July 1, 1849." I am somewhat confused here as to the pick up of Henry Browne, son of Jesse Browne being listed as 4. A. after Martha Browne, who married James Allen. I will try and decipher this or either possibly type the whole several pages as a document exactly as is in the folder and sent out to Rootsweb. I hope that this small amount of information can give you an idea if this is the family that you are interested in. But, I have not seen a Dr. Samuel or any Anthonys within the pages. Henry Randall Brown was born January 4, 1909; and, if my memory is not too far off, I believe that he died approximately 1961. Henry Randall Brown was the son of Simon Henry Brown (DOB June 1, 1863 and DOD August 19, 1935). Simon Henry Brown married Devalsco Eugenia Hargrove, daughter of Daniel Jackson and Elizabeth Thomas Hargrove, on December 1, 1891. Last week I was going through some old pictures and came across a folder with the heading of "The Browne Family of Virginia, North Carolina, and Alabama -- Rock Hill, S.C. July 25, 1956." It begins with, "Full credit for this work is given to Col. Woolsey Finnell of Tuscaloosa, Ala., who spent many years and much money collecting the data for it, to his family, and especially to his daughter, Mrs. Nubie Livingston, who did the major part of the correspondence, the assimilating of this material, and typing it." (NOTE: The information in the first paragraph of this message regarding Henry Randall Brown's parents, date of birth and date of marriage to Annie Laurie Strickland is also taken from the information prepared and in the folder giving credit to research of Col. Woolsey Finnel.) The information in the folder begins first regarding Thomas Brown's will that was probated in 1765 in what was then Jerusalem, but is now Courtland, in Southampton County, Virginia. The name of his wife was unknown. Then it mentions Dr. Jesse Browne who was a prominent doctor. There is quite a bit of information on those who come after. 3. Bob - Thanks for pointing this out - so important for those just beginning their search. I have one ancestor I just finished working on and sorting him out from the other men of the same name who were all in Georgia at the same time and all were Rev. soldiers... I had to do it by finding the others and placing them, and then I knew that the one I could not place was our own ancestor... it took a long time but I am confident that I have the correct documentation now... I had to find records for the other men just to rule them out... and with a name like Brown - it cannot be simple! I know that Papaw has a Benjamin Brown who was in Georgia the same time as our Benjamin but not in East Georgia... but I once found the burial for his Benjamin and got excited since we believe that our Benjamin is now buried under the lake... however it was not long before I realized this was not our Benjamin. I have another ancestor, a descendant of Benjamin, named George Washington Brown - I know of at least three in the same general vicinity at the same time... very difficult name to research and get anything right! However, the only way is with proper documentation... and that is difficult for me since I live in Virginia and am unable to travel. I have found wonderful friends on the internet and have accumulated a lot of documentation... Its difficult and easy to give up - I have with Benjamin - there were just too many Brown families in the Culpeper/Orange County areas for me to even try. Sometimes its wiser to accept what we have and decide its time to quit! Diane My Benjamin Brown also married a Nancy ?? about 1798 in Laurens SC. They are not the same persons as noted above. This Benj died 1813 in Laurens SC. He had a brother there named Samuel. That's all I have on him. They had children, but none of the same names listed for Diane's Benjamin. Just thought I would show this because it shows how easy it is to mix up the Brown lines. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
