    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jwg3 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brougham/55/mb.ashx Message Board Post: BROUGHAMs & Peter Wyly, I found it hard to find your (Peter's) & my postings to the Brougham Bulletin board made this month because they were in reply to a long string of postings starting 23 Jan. 2003. They were under the subject "Lord Henry Brougham family members". I hope I don't get in trouble for answering Peter's concern about the cost of testing. I have good news to encourage genetic genealogy. 8 Mar 2009 8:24PM GMT Peter said to the BROUGHAM board: "It [DNA testing] is, incidentally, much more expensive in this country - the last quote I had was $US450.", so I emailed the help desk at Family Tree DNA & asked how much more it costs for someone in the UK to test with Family Tree DNA of Houston Texas. What she said means it only costs only $2 more. Here is what she said: >From : [email protected] >To : [email protected] >Subject: RE: Cost of Brit taking 37 marker test (ID:295433) >Date : Fri, Mar 13, 2009 10:06 AM > >Hello James, > >As long as he orders within the project, the test would >be $149 $6 shipping. > >Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or >need additional assistance. Have a great day. > >Ashley Coursey >Family Tree DNA >713.868.1438 >http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com I recommend Family Tree DNA (FT DNA) because they PERSONALLY answer emails (don't use FORM letters) & they offer a wider variety of tests, are very accurate, & we are told they have more surname projects than other DNA companies and many more test subjects to compare your DNA to & matching DNA is the genealogical purpose of Y-DNA testing. Compare SMGF.org It is free, but you have to turn in your pedigree with all ancestors back to births before 1850. That is easy for most genealogists, but some may not be prepared & it is slow because they check your info & still you need to be tested by FT DNA. Ancestry.com is cheaper than FT DNA, but not if you have to start over at FT DNA because Ancestry.com does not offer all the tests you want later & does not have the multitude of participants you need to match your DNA against. I am the group administrator for the BROOM project at FT DNA, but I make no money from DNA testing. I will answer your emails. I was told my BROOMs were originally BROUGHAMs but I see no record of that, so I want to see if our BROOM DNA matches BROUGHAMs' DNA. Peter said in his above posting that BROUGHAM is pronounced BROOM so I think BROOM may be an Americanization of BROUGHAM. If you have questions or concerns, email me at [email protected] To get tested: 1) go to http://familytreedna.com/ 2) click on "PROJECTS", 3) scroll down to the 1st table which is labeled "Y-DNA SURNAME PROJECTS" 4) click on "B (427)", perhaps it will be a larger number than 427. 427 just means there are 427 surname projects at FTDNA currently. 4) click on "Broom" which accepts BROUGHAMs. 5) scroll down & order the Y-DNA37 test. That will suffice to determine which BROUGHAMs are kin to which BROUGHAMs (& if kin to BROOM/Es). I do not advise any lesser test. Any other path at FT DNA will cause you to pay $259 ($110 more than within a project) for the 37 marker test. -- James W.
