    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pbwyly Surnames: Brougham Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brougham/34.2.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Several Broughams went to Australia, but to my knowledge only two can be considered 'genuine' - my great-grandfather, Patrick Brougham and his brother, John. Their descendants are well documented. Other 'Broughams' are almost certainly likely to be BroughAnS - or similar - who came from Ireland and were dubbed Brougham by immigration officials. This was a common practice in UK, America and Australia and wasn't solely applied to the Irish. I have a Frederick William 'Brougham', born London 1892 who was last heard of in India and is thought to have died there in 1910 following the death of his elder son. This does not square with the fact that a son was born in 1911! I did not find his death in the registers held by the India Office. FWB had married in India, and his wife is said to have died shortly after the birth of the second son. I have contacted the Welsh descendants of the second son, but they are very cagey about what actually happened. It is possible that FWB AND his wife bottled off to Oz, leaving her parents to bring up the baby. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
