My family's legend is that we were BROUGHAMs. I would suppose that would have to have been sometime prior to 1753 (birth of Wm. BROOM) probably in NC or MD in the British colonies of America. (Wm. BROOM's tombstone indicates he was born 1753 & died 1826. He's buried in Fairfield Co. SC.) I live on a little more than 100 acres of my gt.gt.gt. grandfather William BROOM's land that he had when he died in 1826 when per his will he had almost 3,000 acres in south Fairfield Co. SC. Is BROUGHAM prounced BROOM or brew-ham or what? You all could do me a big favor by getting someone named BROUGHAM to take the DNA test at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Broom Just scroll down on that page & you will see the discounted group project price of $149 for a 37 marker test. Many unrelated people match closely on 12 markers, so please take at least the Y-DNA25 test, but preferably to Y-DNA37 (or Y-DNA67 test). We have 21 members with results so far. 10 of 11 BROOMs tested match closely so that it appears they all descend from an unknown man who 1st took the surname, when surnames were 1st taken. Best I can tell, the BROOMs at FamilyTree DNA match the Aussie BROOM at another DNA site, who has his line back to a birth about 1490 in Shropshire England. Do you all match? Do you all have your DNA at some other company's site? If so, where? I am told & think Family Tree DNA is the best most accurate company with the most people to match to, but testing anywhere is better than nowhere. Of the people who are in the BROOM DNA project at FT DNA, 5 match my BROOM 1st cousin perfectly on the 1st 25 markers 3 other BROOM/Es are 1 mutation off from my 1st cousin 1 more BROOME is 2 mutations off from my 1st cousin 1 more BROOME is 7 mutations off from my 1st cousin 1 BRUMLEY is 8 mutations off from my 1st cousin 1 BROOMFIELD is 21 mutations off from my 1st cousin There are 2 BRUMMETTs, 1 BRUMM, 1 BRUMBAUGH, & 1 BRUMMEL who have only done 12 markers so I cannot tell how far they would be off on 25 markers. We NEED a BROUGHAM or as many BROUGHAMs as we can get that are not known kin to each other. If you all don't match the BROOM/Es you all can pull out & form your own group at FT DNA, but if any of you match within 3 mutations, then we are definitely all one family & should stay together. If you don't order within the BROOM project (or some project) at FT DNA you will pay much more money for the tests. Please join the BROOM project for now at least. You are welcome to stay in the project whether you all match closely or not. Please post to this forum. I'm subscribed to BROUGHAM-L & have been for years & this forum posts automatically to the BROUGHAM list @RootsWeb.com. signed James W.
