    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pbwyly Surnames: Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brougham/34.2.4.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your family name - Broom - is correct for pronounciation, in fact the baptisms of several early Broughams were entered in parish registers as Broom, Broome or even Browme, the latter confirming that 'BROOM' was the way the name was pronounced, the '...OW...'being pronouned 'OO' in the north of England. A very early speling of the neame was Browgham. As you may have read in one of my earlier posts, anyone claiming to be a Brougham must be able to trace their ancestry back to the (then) village of that name. The village no longer exists, but the area is still known as Brougham. As for DNA testing, there are many 'Broughams' in the USA and Canada, and you should try to collect as large a group of them as you can to see if there is a common thread to your parentage. I only know one Brougham in the UK, my cousin Lord Brougham, and I doubt if he would submit to DNA testing - though he would be one of the very few people in this country who could give a definite marker. It is, incidentally, much more expensive in this country - the last quote I had was $US450. Best wishes in your search. Peter Wyly However, I think that it is unlikely that an ancestral Brougham would make the change to Broom unless he was trying to hide! Author: jwg3 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brougham/34.2.4.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: BROUGHAMs, My mom's maiden surname was BROOM. My family's legend is that we were BROUGHAMs. I would suppose that would have to have been sometime prior to 1753 (birth of Wm. BROOM) probably in NC or MD in the British colonies of America. (Wm. BROOM's tombstone indicates he was born 1753 & died 1826. He's buried in Fairfield Co. SC.) I live on a little more than 100 acres of my gt.gt.gt. grandfather William BROOM's land that he had when he died in 1826 when per his will he had almost 3,000 acres in south Fairfield Co. SC. Is BROUGHAM prounced BROOM or brew-ham or what? You all could do me a big favor by getting someone named BROUGHAM to take the DNA test at http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Broom Just scroll down on that page & you will see the discounted group project price of $149 for a 37 marker test. Many unrelated people match closely on 12 markers, so please take at least the Y-DNA25 test, but preferably to Y-DNA37 (or Y-DNA67 test). We have 21 members with results so far. 10 of 11 BROOMs tested match closely so that it appears they all descend from an unknown man who 1st took the surname, when surnames were 1st taken. Best I can tell, the BROOMs at FamilyTree DNA match the Aussie BROOM at another DNA site, who has his line back to a birth about 1490 in Shropshire England. Do you all match? Do you all have your DNA at some other company's site? If so, where? I am told & think Family Tree DNA is the best most accurate company with the most people to match to, but testing anywhere is better than nowhere. Of the people who are in the BROOM DNA project at FT DNA, 5 match my BROOM 1st cousin perfectly on the 1st 25 markers 3 other BROOM/Es are 1 mutation off from my 1st cousin 1 more BROOME is 2 mutations off from my 1st cousin 1 more BROOME is 7 mutations off from my 1st cousin 1 BRUMLEY is 8 mutations off from my 1st cousin 1 BROOMFIELD is 21 mutations off from my 1st cousin There are 2 BRUMMETTs, 1 BRUMM, 1 BRUMBAUGH, & 1 BRUMMEL who have only done 12 markers so I cannot tell how far they would be off on 25 markers. We NEED a BROUGHAM or as many BROUGHAMs as we can get that are not known kin to each other. If you all don't match the BROOM/Es you all can pull out & form your own group at FT DNA, but if any of you match within 3 mutations, then we are definitely all one family & should stay together. If you don't order within the BROOM project (or some project) at FT DNA you will pay much more money for the tests. Please join the BROOM project for now at least. You are welcome to stay in the project whether you all match closely or not. Please post to this forum. Author: pbwyly Surnames: Brougham Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brougham/34.2.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Several Broughams went to Australia, but to my knowledge only two can be considered 'genuine' - my great-grandfather, Patrick Brougham and his brother, John. Their descendants are well documented. Other 'Broughams' are almost certainly likely to be BroughAnS - or similar - who came from Ireland and were dubbed Brougham by immigration officials. This was a common practice in UK, America and Australia and wasn't solely applied to the Irish. I have a Frederick William 'Brougham', born London 1892 who was last heard of in India and is thought to have died there in 1910 following the death of his elder son. This does not square with the fact that a son was born in 1911! I did not find his death in the registers held by the India Office. FWB had married in India, and his wife is said to have died shortly after the birth of the second son. I have contacted the Welsh descendants of the second son, but they are very cagey about what actually happened. It is possible that FWB AND his wife bottled off to Oz, leaving her parents to bring up the baby. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The family story is that my great-grandmother was the illegitimate daughter of an unnamed Indian lady and a 'Lord Brougham.' As she was born in 1875 in India, the most likely contender seems to be Henry Charles Brougham, 3rd Baron Brougham and Vaux (1836 - 1927). Can anyone confirm he visited India? From Schenectady, NY. My family pronounces it Brockum. A statue in Cannes, France was erected to Lord James Brougham for a reason I have forgotten. I believe his name was pronounced Broom or Broam. David Niven pronounced it Broam in the original film of "The Bishops Wife" with Cary Grant and Loretta Young. Kirk Douglas pronounced it the same way in the film "The List Of Adrian Messenger." Kirk is a local boy from Amsterdam, NY but I am sure that Hollywood has no better handle than the rest of us. With updated spellings and mispronuciations through the years, I am sure that a definitive answer will never be discovered. Try Braggham for instance!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/DNG.2ACIB/34.2.4 Message Board Post: Yvonne: what you didn't know about Lord Brougham is that he and his two surviving brothers concocted a way of disinheriting the sons of John Waugh Brougham - who was my g.g.grandfather. A letter from William (2nd Baron B&V) to my g.grandfather's youngest brother (a barrister and legal adviser to the Broughams) shows that the estates were transferred to William in 1832 'because Lord Brougham and James Brougham were so much in debt that if either died the estate would have to be sold'. In debt they may have been - but Brougham was entailed, and therefore could not be mortgaged. Moreover, William wrote that their father had died intestate - he did not, and his will shows the estate entailed to each son, and to their sons, in turn, so that it should have passed to my g.grandfather, who was the oldest surviving nephew. Lord Palmerston was not infavour of granting the second peerage in favour of William, who had done nothing to deserve it, but the excuse was found a! s you have stated it. Why was JWB's family disinherited? Your guess is as good as mine. I have copies of all the correspondence.
