So they refer to Brougham hall and Brougham castle in this way. I come from a group of Brougham's who were based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England - here we pronounce it more like brawm as in prawn but swap the p for a b and the n for a m. I think broom and brawm are the common pronunciations in the UK. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. William and Elizabeth Moss, our great grandparents, resided in Sherbrooke S. for most of their lives. They had nine children including our grandmother, Martha. William died February 1925 and his death certificate states he was buried in Maberly. Elizabeth died August 4, 1937 and her obit says the service was held at the United Church in Maberly. We have been unable to find where either Elizabeth or William are buried and have checked the three cemeteries in Maberly, Laidley, Rokeby and Bollingbrook. They may be buried in Brooke Cemetery but we have been unable to contact the person in charge of this cemetery to check the records. Any input anyone has or if you are related to William and Elizabeth Moss would you please contact us. The maiden name of Elizabeth was Brougham also spelled Broughen, Broughan or Brohan. Thank you. There is a book that was published in 1892 and writen by the Rev,J.R.Kayss. He was the vicar at Dalton (Nr Wigton?). Its called "The Monumental Inscriptions of the Parish Church and Churchyard and The Congregational Burial Ground. Wigton Cumberland".A couple of years ago I managed to get a copy on a CD. I bought it on the internet. It list all the inscriptions on the gravestones as they were in 1892. The congregation burial ground opened in about 1853 , up till then burials took place in the churchyard. There are a few grave stones belonging to the Pearsons. One reads as follows. In memory of Joseph Pearson of Wigton who died Nov,r 27, 1803 age 50 years, and Margaret his wife who died Jan,y 6, 1830, age 70. Also of Thomas and Robert their sons, who died in their infancy. And of William their son who died at Glasgow, April 22nd 1840 age 47 years. Also Mary the wife of John Pearson who died Feb,y 18th 1850 aged 69 years. The above John Pearson died Sept, 23, 1871, age 86 years. Interred in this cemetery. That`s all I know about William? He could have been married? The Thomas who died was the 1st Thomas b1783, and Robert was born in 1802. (died 1804) Another stone reads as follows. In memory of John son of Thomas and Mary Pearson of Wigton who died Oct,r 20th 1840, age 8 years. The above Thomas Pearson died March 3, 1847, aged 54 years. I went to Wigton a couple of years ago. All the gravestones were take down and layed flat in front of the church in about 1950. The vicar at the time was Rev, Ford, who was the father of Anna Ford the newsreader. She went to school in Wigton when she was young. I managed to find Joseph,s stone although the top and bottom sections were missing. Thomas,s stone I could not find. By the way son Joseph b1790 was parish clerk from 1823 until he went to Newcastle on Tyne in 1826. His brother Thomas then took the job until his death in 1847, then Thomas,s son William became parish clerk Thanks Dave. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Im most interested in you saying that Thomas Pearson,s grandfather was Johan Pearson b1724. Thomas was born in 1793 (a twin) son of Joseph Pearson and Margaret Turner. I have the marrage record of Joseph and Margaret. It shows the following. Joseph Pearson Batchelor of this Parish Age 29 and Margaret Turner Singlewoman Age 23. Married in this church by Banns this First day of January 1783. Working back over this would make Joseph born 1753. Joseph died in 1803 Age 50. Again working backover this makes him born in 1753. This is where I am stuck. I can,t trace him father with certainty. The following are possible. International Genealogical Index Joseph Pearson Christening: 20 SEP 1750 Wigton, Cumberland, England Father John. JOSEPH PEARSON OR WHITE Christening: 13 DEC 1752 Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England. Father Joseph. Mother Ann White. Joseph Pearson Christening: 08 JUL 1753 All Saints, Cockermouth, Cumberland, England Father Richard. Joseph Pearson Christening: 02 OCT 1753 Alston, Cumberland, England Father Joseph. The two that fit the date 1753 are the last two but I can`t find a link to prove it. I,ve often thought that Richard from Cockermouth may be Joseph,s father? Have you found other info, to link Thomas with a John (grandfather) ? I would be most interested. Thanks Dave. This would make him a lot older (<31 years>) than Martha? In the 1871 Census Mary was visiting her daughter Jane (who had married Thomas Irvin on the 8th June 1850 in Wigton.) The other visitor was Mary,s grandaughter Mary Jane Elizabeth Pearson Age 19 who was born in Wigton in 1851 to Mary b1829)- the unmarried daughter of Thomas Pearson and Mary Pearson (nee Brougham). I also do most of my family history on the internet and I have not been able to find Mary in the 1881 census? I started by creating my tree on a data base called Family tree Make. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: jwg3 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brougham/55/mb.ashx Message Board Post: BROUGHAMs & Peter Wyly, I found it hard to find your (Peter's) & my postings to the Brougham Bulletin board made this month because they were in reply to a long string of postings starting 23 Jan. 2003. They were under the subject "Lord Henry Brougham family members". I hope I don't get in trouble for answering Peter's concern about the cost of testing. I have good news to encourage genetic genealogy. 8 Mar 2009 8:24PM GMT Peter said to the BROUGHAM board: "It [DNA testing] is, incidentally, much more expensive in this country - the last quote I had was $US450.", so I emailed the help desk at Family Tree DNA & asked how much more it costs for someone in the UK to test with Family Tree DNA of Houston Texas. What she said means it only costs only $2 more. Here is what she said: >From : [email protected] >To : [email protected] >Subject: RE: Cost of Brit taking 37 marker test (ID:295433) >Date : Fri, Mar 13, 2009 10:06 AM > >Hello James, > >As long as he orders within the project, the test would >be $149 $6 shipping. > >Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or >need additional assistance. Have a great day. > >Ashley Coursey >Family Tree DNA >713.868.1438 >http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com I recommend Family Tree DNA (FT DNA) because they PERSONALLY answer emails (don't use FORM letters) & they offer a wider variety of tests, are very accurate, & we are told they have more surname projects than other DNA companies and many more test subjects to compare your DNA to & matching DNA is the genealogical purpose of Y-DNA testing. Compare SMGF.org It is free, but you have to turn in your pedigree with all ancestors back to births before 1850. That is easy for most genealogists, but some may not be prepared & it is slow because they check your info & still you need to be tested by FT DNA. Ancestry.com is cheaper than FT DNA, but not if you have to start over at FT DNA because Ancestry.com does not offer all the tests you want later & does not have the multitude of participants you need to match your DNA against. I am the group administrator for the BROOM project at FT DNA, but I make no money from DNA testing. I will answer your emails. I was told my BROOMs were originally BROUGHAMs but I see no record of that, so I want to see if our BROOM DNA matches BROUGHAMs' DNA. Peter said in his above posting that BROUGHAM is pronounced BROOM so I think BROOM may be an Americanization of BROUGHAM. If you have questions or concerns, email me at [email protected] To get tested: 1) go to http://familytreedna.com/ 2) click on "PROJECTS", 3) scroll down to the 1st table which is labeled "Y-DNA SURNAME PROJECTS" 4) click on "B (427)", perhaps it will be a larger number than 427. 427 just means there are 427 surname projects at FTDNA currently. 4) click on "Broom" which accepts BROUGHAMs. 5) scroll down & order the Y-DNA37 test. That will suffice to determine which BROUGHAMs are kin to which BROUGHAMs (& if kin to BROOM/Es). I do not advise any lesser test. Any other path at FT DNA will cause you to pay $259 ($110 more than within a project) for the 37 marker test. -- James W.
