(I noticed Ichabod yesterday -- I've only come across three Ichabods, so he ought to be a cinch to track with that moniker.) The household composition numbers also tell you whether Ichabod's household was young, in-between or elderly, and whether a family had slaves or servants. In Orange County, NY, my 1800 census index records six BROOKS heads of household. The numbers following their names represent grouping of household members into gender and age categories. 3. Chris; Thanks. I had the census index data, I still have to get copies of the actual census, but will. I thought maybe someone on this list had already found a Brooks relative that was in the Orange County, NY area. There are Brooks listed in a couple of towns in Orange, some seem to be related and others do not. I am sure that there must be a common thread somewhere, I just have not found it yet. Family lore lists Ma as the area the family came from, but I do not know what that information was based on. But I will find out, I hope. Based on the 1790's census data looks like they moved into the area between 1790 and 1800. Unless the 1790's data is very incomplete. Thanks for the help!! If you can give me multiple names (male given names, particularly) that you know are related, I can run a search on my own data for a family with a similar constellation in Massachusetts. Obviously, the chances improve with the number of names you can connect and with their rarity. If you had a Rufus or a Leander or a Theophilus in there, the chances would, obviously, improve substantially. :-) I've just pulled up a county map of NY. Orange is on the Pennylvania state line. Its easternmost portion also appears to be only about 25 miles from Fairfield and Litchfield Counties, CT. There is a poorly documented Brooks line in Fairfield County which appears without an emigrant progenitor in one John Brooks, who marries, 1685 at Stratford, Fairfield, CT, the widow Sarah (OSBORN) Peat. Some of the line can be reconstructed from Barbour listings of various Fairfield towns, and Jacobus does his usual masterful job in "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield" (1930), but only as far as he takes them ... Half a dozen sons, born 1730 to 1745, have nothing beyond mention of their birth, so they would appear to have removed from their birthplace. You might take a look at this work on the basis of geographical proximity to Orange County. Or post some names to the list and I'll see if they're found in either Fairfield or Litchfield Counties. If your folks are from PA, I can't help you ... Chris

    3. Chris; Orange County is right along the Hudson River, and does extend to the NY/NJ/ PA borders. All of the Brooks I have seen in the 1800's Census have been in the Eastern part of the county. Near the Hudson River. And may have moved from Ct between 1790 and 1800. I will do some more research on my end, d whenI have a list of names for John D's siblings, and paents will post it to the group. Unfourtunatly nothing after 1840 indicated that any of my line of brooks's had rare names. Seems most of them were James, Fred, or William,. The most unusual name I can link was my Great Great grandfather who was William Sayres Brooks. I assume maybe incorrectly that Sayres was his mothers maiden name or a family name. His son also a William was named William Hill Brooks, his mothers maiden name. I will see if I can pickup the books on the Ct line of Brooks's, and see where that leads. Thanks for the help.
