I'm still at a complete stop with my Brooks family. I'm more and more convinced that they're from Halifax, Nova Scotia even though my own grandfather, William Essex Brooks was definitely born in Charlestown, MA My grandfather: William Essex Brooks - born July 7, 1891 to Charles J. Brooks and Emma A. Glass Charles J. Brooks - the only verifiable information I have is his death certificate - he died in Boston, MA on January 4, 1898. His father is listed as James Brooks and Charles' birthplace as Halifax. Emma Glass Brooks remarried (to Peter Landy), and died Nov. 6, 1933 in Halifax where she is buried. I was thrown off by a researcher in Utah who sent me birth information on a Charles J. Brooks who was born to Frank A. Brooks and Lizzie J. ________ in Otisfield, Maine on Feb. 11, 1869 - the age is close to the death certificate (which says he was 31), but there is no other information on that line. Any ideas? Is no birth certificate to be found in Halifax for Charles? Have you looked at Canadian census for Halifax? City directories? I checked the LDS catalog CD I have and there's a TON of stuff on microfilm available on Halifax, of which here's just one example: Title Records, 1844-1950 Notes Microreproduction of typescript.
