I have an Eli Brooks that married Naomi Wilson abt 1821 in Swanzey, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Eli Brooks parents were Lemme Brooks and Amelia Blakislee. I think Eli married three times with Naomi being his 1st wife. Other wives were Sophronia Halbert (married abt 1843) and Eliza Mason (married 28 Mar 1852). The children of Eli and Naomi were Zelots born abt 1824 and Augusta Marie Brooks born 11 Sep 1836. I come through Augusta. She was my 2nd great-grandmother. Debbie, The Eli born to Lemuel ("Lemme") and Amelia did indeed marry Sophronia Halbert, as the 1850 census indicates. They ended up (like many of this Brooks branch) at Butternuts, now Morris, Otsego, NY, where Eli died in 1858, and Sophronia in 1882. The authority for this, beyond the census and a couple of Barbour mentions, is Jacobus, "Families of Ancient New Haven." Given his reputation, you want want to cross Eliza Mason off your list of wives. :-) I thought the name Naomi Wilson was familiar, and found that you have previously posted a similar query from which I made notes. If so, forgive me if this is the same response, but what makes you think that Eli Brooks, husband of Naomi Wilson, was the son of Lemuel and Amelia? Swanzey as a location is all wrong (there weren't any Cheshire line strays anywhere in that vicinity), and Jacobus mentions no wife other than Sophronia. I suspect Eli had just the one wife and went directly from Connecticut to Otsego County. The notes I made from your previous query, however, shows Eli in residence at Lyndon, VT in 1830. That's about 25 miles from where I live and way, way off the usual migration path. I haven't got access to an indexed 1830 census, so I can't check this at the moment, but you might want to. If Eli the Cheshire native is at Butternuts in 1830, he can't be the same man at Lyndon, VT that year. You can see the Jacobus research abstracted at the Tributaries website.
