As I said before, there were multiple men named Eli Brooks living at this time in New England. I know of six who married during this time span. No doubt there were even more of whom I'm ignorant. (Be glad he wasn't named John.) One of my six Elis, the son of Lemuel Brooks and Amelia Blakesley, married Sophronia Halbert by 1830 and went to New York. He is NOT your man. He can't be your man. His wife lived until the 1880s. When you consider conflicting information, one of the most valuable things you can do is to look at the reliability of the sources that are presented. If you google on "Jacobus," you'll find he was the founder of TAG (The American Genealogist), and the most respected genealogist of the first half of the 20th century. In this case, the census records bear him out completely. I'm not questioning your facts in any way. An Eli clearly was at Lyndon and Barton, and St. Jay is just a few miles south of them. But the son of Lemuel and Amelia was already married to someone else in NY state in 1830. So you need to find other parents for your Eli. Unfortunately, I don't have them. Have you been able to find Eli in the 1850 census? That would give us a reported birth state and age, which would be a start. Hello again, How positive are you (what is the source?) that Augusta's father was Eli? There is an Augusta Brooks are 14, in the Peoria Co. Ill 1850 census, with parents Cyrus and Emily. All of the family, but the youngest child, born Vermont.
