    1. Thomas Brooks, died 1868 in Indiana

    3. Hello, I am looking for information on my 3rd great-grandfather Thomas Brooks who died in Randolph County, Indiana on 28 Jan. 1868. Thomas was b. c1794/1795 in New Jersey (1850 census) or New York (1860 census). According to his widow's pension papers, she was Thomas's 3rd wife. I know nothing of wife 1 & 2. Thomas served in the War of 1812 in a regiment organized in Urbana, Champaign County, OH. On 29 Mar. 1836 he was married to Susannah (Kimbrough) Holcraft/Holdcraft in Clinton County, OH. They removed to Randolph County, Ind. shortly after their marriage and were enumerated there in the 1840 census through the end of each of their lives. The only clue that I have regarding Thomas's life before his marriage to Susannah is that he had a daughter Margaret Brooks, b. abt 1822-24 in Ohio who DID NOT appear with her father and step-mother until the 1870 census. I have not been able to find her in the previous census (1850-1860) although there is a young woman named Margaret Brooks in the 1850 census in Alexander Twp., Athens County, OH living with Magdalene Brooks, age 66, b. New Jersey (perhaps a grandmother?) who could be her. Nothing in the 1860 census. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, --Jane Torres

    3. Hi, Jane! I'd rule out Magdelene as the grandmother. She would have been born in 1784. That would make her 10 or 11 when Thomas the 3rd was born. Maybe a older sister of Thomas'. Have you tried any of the small town historical societies to see if there's a Bio on Thomas? I have a friend who hit a brick wall then hit paydirt with the Warren County (Ohio) Historical Society. Also, have you tried probate records?
