Hi Ann, and list, I did some research in the census on Ancestry looking any Ohio Alexander Brooks. I first found him in the 1850, age 6, born abt. 1844 in Ohio, he was in an infirmary run by Oliver Cleveland in Eaton, Preble County Ohio and was designated as a pauper. I then looked in the 1840 census for any Brooks Family in Preble county. There were two, Henry in Jackson, and Jacob in Casper or Gasper Preble Co., both born in VA. So I am assuming that they were brothers or at least related. The next search was a marriage which has Alexander and Annie E. Dunning marrying on 14-Sep-1870, Jackson, Preble Co. I then searched in the 1870 which finds in Jackson, Alexander age 25 born Ohio abt. 1845, father born Va. Mother born Indiana, he is in the home of Lewis Schute occupation working on farm, there is an Anna E. designated as wife to Lewis but I am thinking it was a mistake and she was the wife of Alexander. In the 1880 census he is found in German, Montgomery Co. Ohio age, 34 born Ohio, father, VA. Mother Indiana. He is head and his wife is Annie E. 37 born Ohio, father and mother also born Ohio, children Charles R. 8, Frank E. 5, and Edward A. 3 all born Ohio. The 1900 census finds him in Eel Cass Indiana, age 57, born March 1843 Ohio, whoever gave the information says parents both born Ohio, married 30 years, Annie E. born January 1842 Ohio, father New York (last time it says he was born in Ohio), mother Ohio with only Edward born July 1877 Ohio. I decided to see if I could find Jacob or Henry after the 1840 census. In the 1850 census I found Jacob 44, born abt. 1806 in VA., with wife Hannah age 41 born Va. John 21 born Va. Nicholas 18 born Ohio. All of the following were born in Ohio. Jacob 16, Mary 15, Susan 14, Lucinda 12, Joseph 8, Sarah 7, Peter 3 Daniel 20. As you can see there is a nice little space between Sarah and Peter for another child and Alexander was 6 and in the infirmary in. It bares looking into but there was also another Alexander in Ohio, about the same age with father Henry mother Millie, Henry was Black and Millie and Alexander were classed as Malatto. They were both from VA. But that Alexander was born in Mississippi. All of this is census and guessing as I have NO primary proof that this is your Alexander and he is not in my line. Hope this answers some questions for you. Warm Regards, Kitty Scott
