    3. Dear Rick Harwood and David Hoffman: In connection with Rick's list of Unconnected Brooks, I'd like to offer some other data for your consideration about the parents of James Smith. Simon Smith was his father; I believe his mother was Elizabeth Wells, not Alice or Alice Wells. Torrey is the source of the naming of Simon's wife as Alice - I do not have the new CD from NEHGS which includes Torrey's sources, but Torrey is not an original source. Best one probably is the Haddam Church Records which calls the wife of this Simon Smith Elizabeth Wells. (Simon is the son of an earlier Simon, a first settler of Haddam, and my ancestor.) Torrey also suggests that Elizabeth Wells is the wife of Simon's brother Benjamin, but he is the only one that I have ever seen to make that suggestion. Brainard in the Boston Transcript 23 Jan 1935 says Simon "married about 1688 Elizabeth daughter of Capt. James and Elizabeth (Clark) Wells. No dates regarding her are obtainable.
