    3. "Rueben Brooks" .... do you mean perhaps Reuben Brooks. If you mean the Reuben Brooks that married Ann(a) Terry, you're into some exciting territory. Ann Terry is descended from Ann Marbury Hutchinson, co-founder of Rhode Island. Once you get to Ann Marbury Hutchinson, it's a well-researched, four-lane genealogy highway back from there. Descendants of AMH include Franklin Delano Roosevelt and George Bush, cousins .... albeit distant. 3. J - I cannot say for sure but the John Brooks shown at "Niskayuna", Schenectady County, could be John William Brooks born Schodack, Rensselaer Co., NY. I have his birth date as 25 Jun 1800, but sometime the census ages are off by a few years. Also I have his wife married 21 Dec 1822 as Lany Haber. If so, he would be a brother of my 3rd great grandfather Abraham L. Brooks born Nassau, Rensselaer Co., on 12 Jan 1805. They were sons of Casparus Brooks, bp. Kinderhook 20 Jun 1776, who married at Claverack 11 Dec 1798 Christina Brooks. If you think this is the right family for your John I will be happy to share with you what I know of the family. (Jane Devlin's original, edited.) ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected] To: <[email protected] Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2001 11: 03 AM Subject: [CTMID] Barbour Records via IGI SKS on the general CT mailing list posted a way to access the Barbour listings of Connecticut vital records on the LDS site. It starts out fairly complicated because, while the Barbour film numbers are listed in the catalog, you need to find a "Batch Number" in order to search them. The post gave one batch # and directions for searching for one surname. Since then, I've been playing around with it - I've added over 150 birth records! In the process, I've been making a list of the surnames and the batch #s that will access them which I'll paste in below. The information on the LDS site is a transcription [by volunteers] of the microfilmed original Barbour transcriptions, so I suppose it would be considered a 3rd hand source, but the LDS practice of double keying transcriptions of records [two different people type the data in and any discrepancies are analyzed by a third person], it's going to be fairly accurate, in my opinion. To access the data, first go to the FamilySearch site at http://familysearch. org/Eng/Search/frameset_search. asp and choose the International Geneological Index. Using the guide below, enter a surname & a batch number. Be sure to set the region for North America. If the surname you want isn't listed, play around a little and try a number on either side of the unsuccessful one. The batch numbers run sequentially and correspond with the alphabetically sorted films. 3. --=======73A46759======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-474F1DF3; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Good morning, Those of you researching in Connecticut will want to keep your eyes peeled today. Some other folks (I don't know who to credit) have developed a method to access the Barbour Collection records extracted in the IGI (the International Genealogical Index of the LDS). While the Barbour film numbers are listed in the LDS holdings catalog (www.familysearch.org), you need a "Batch Number" in order to search the records themselves. As I understand, someone on a CT list posted one batch number and directions for searching one surname. Jane Devlin, listowner of CTMIDDLE-L at RootsWeb, took that tip and played around with it to refine the search technique, and has since worked out batch numbers for the Middlesex County, CT Barbour films. David Hoffman, of CTMIDDLE and our list has well, has added many towns and has kindly sent me batch numbers he's worked out for CT, MA and RI. I will be forwarding several posts. The first will contain general instructions on the technique. Subsequent posts will contain the batch numbers I've collected, one state per post. As/if I can get my hands on more batch numbers I'll update each affected state for the list. Enjoy! 1. [B-NE] Almond and Christiana Brooks - Cuyahoga Co. OH 1847
    2. In researching Almond (father-Daniel, prob. gr-father Azariah of St. Albans) Brooks in Cuyahoga Co. OH land records, I found another Almond Brooks. Does anyone know anything about an Almond Brooks with wife Christiana? They lived in Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga Co., OH, per 1847 land records. Someone checked and could NOT find them on the 1840 or 1850 census in Cuyahoga Co. OH. I have no idea whether they were related to the Brooks of St. Albans, VT, that moved to Cuyahoga County. However, there is mention of a Bliss in these land records. Almond (son of Daniel Brooks, probable son of Azariah Brooks) named a son Leonard Bliss Brooks. Since most northern OH settlers came from the NE, I thought I would post a notice here. So as not to confuse the two Almond Brooks - this is some of what I know of Almond, son of Daniel: Almond D. Brooks born 1808 in St. Albans, died 1891. Wife: Fedilia Plummer married 1835 Union Co. OH Residences: Miamisport, Miami Co., IN 1840 Pike Twp., Madison Co., OH 1850 IL 1870 Hastings, Adams Co., NE 1885 Sherman Precinct, Nuckolls Co., NE 1890 These are the deeds related to the unknown Almond: 1847 APR 26 Charles E. Morton and wife Huldah of Cuyahoga Co. OH to Almon Brooks of same. $100; land in Chagrin Falls Twp. being numbers 9 and 10 range of townships of the Connecticut Western Reserve, known by part of lot 18 of A. Bliss allotment in the village of Chagrin Falls being all of said lot 18 except what is S of a line drawn parallel with Orange Street and 100 feet N of Orange Street and subject to all reservations in a deed from Aaron Bliss to C. E. Morton of July 25, 1843, and these premises are 100 feet on Cottage Street and 139 feet deep by the same more or less, but subject to all legal highways. Wits: C. T. Blakeslee (also the notary public), George Barker. Signed: Charles E. Morton, Huldah Morton. (39-464/465) 1847 DEC 7 Almond Brooks and wife Christiana of Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga Co., to Jeduthan Freeman Jr. of same place. $50; land in Chagrin Falls Twp. # in R9 & R10 of townships in the Connecticut Western Reserve, known as part of lot 18 of Aaron Bliss allotment in the town of Chagrin Falls being all of said lot 18 except so much thereof as lies S of a line drawn parallel with Orange Street and 100 feet N of Orange Street and subject to all reservations in a deed from Aaron Bliss to Charles E. Morton of July 25, 1843, and the lot of land hereby conveyed is 100 feet on Cottage Street and 139 feet deep by the same more or less. The condition of this deed is such that whereas the said Brooks on 2 DEC 1847 executed and delivered to the said Freeman a promissory note of hand for $41.14 payable in one year from date. If said Brooks pays the note according to the terms thereof, then the above deed shall be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Wits: Alanson Knox (also the J. P.), Mary Brooks. Signed: Almond Brooks, Christiana Brooks. (40-417) I know that the Aaron Bliss mentioned in the deeds may not have any relationship to the Brooks family - he may just have laid out part of the town. You mentioned your brother's notes -- was there a particular state (I'm guessing NY, but perhaps also MI) that he was researching, or that has significance in your family history? 3. Hi Chris, Thanks for the great response!! Yes, citations were listed in the back of the book; however, I've since returned the book to the library. Next time I go over there, I'll check out the citations and get back to you. I can't do a "cut and paste" with this old DOS-based email program, so can't include the section regarding the citation you requested. Sorry about that. (Good news! My new computer, currently under construction, should be here in a couple of weeks!!) Peace and Gentle Sunsets, --Pam http://www.geocities/orcawind
