    3. Hi Carol T, Many of my lines migrated to Cement City, MI in the early 1800s (siblings of my Martin Brooks b 1800 d d1871) They were Marchant(AKA John)), Roswell, and a William Brooks. I do not know why. Haven't studied that gen sibs yet. My Martin Brooks took his family and migrated to 1-Fountain Co, IN, then to 2-LaSalle Co, IL and 3-Wright co,IA. Girls in each family were named "Mariah". Maybe that was in honor of distant relatives. Please note that many of that gen started having very lg families 9 up to 17 ch!! It all sounds familiar to what you wrote so far. What do you need to know? I can go back to England. 3. hello, i am looking for William brooks and Maria parish (Parrish). they lived near Kalamazoo, Michigan in the 1850s. William was said to have been a stagecoach driver. other than the fact that they were the parents of my great-grandmother, little more is known of them. Mary Jane brooks was born near Kalamazoo in 1857. what happened between 1857 and the 1870 warren Co. ill census is a mystery. in 1870 she was 13 and living with henry kidder and his family. Mary Jane married William Adams and had two daughters Susan Marie and Alice. she married a second time to Aaron see and had my grandfather frend higgins see. Mary Jane had at least one sibling. we had thought it was libbie brooks from the warren Co census, but i traced her to another brooks family, so Mary Jane's sibling(s)could be anyone or anywhere. there was a scandal that was not discussed except for snippets that could be pried out of my grandparents. thank you, carol t upper Michigan [email protected]

For Stryker's work, this is especially helpful since not only can you search for names of possible Civil War Veterans, but you can also browse the table of contents for the place in the book where certain regiments are outlined (rather than searching through a multitude of hits). The Boolean searching is quite extensive, involving the use of wildcards, searching a word that is within a certain proximity to another, words that are adjacent, and other advanced search options. See the site's "Searching Tips section for a full description at: http://www.njstatelib.org/plweb/operat.html . Online help is also provided. Both databases were well constructed. But when I recently counted my Williams, there were 432 of them, and how I will ever disentangle the majority of them seems an unanswerable question. I've seriously erred in the past by suggesting John as the most common given name in New England Brooks families. :he had at least 2 children with maria parish (i have not found proof :of marriage yet) [snip] But at least you have a working surname to begin with. Have you tried an online search for Maria PARISH (I'd also look at PARRISH)? Sometimes the "other family" (i.e., a Parish researcher) will have the data you need, and neither of these names is forbiddingly commonplace. :one of the daughters mary jane is living with henry kidder and his :wife in warren co, illinois in the 1870 census, lore has maria going :to st louis to look for work. I'll echo my previous paragraph for the KIDDER surname. This is Scottish, and the Kidders spread from MA and NH -- I've run into a lot of them in northern New England. Since it's much less common than BROOKS, you might find a Kidder researcher with whom you could connect. I would consider that a much better chance than finding a needle in a haystack in metropolitan St. Louis. :its possible william was killed in the civil war In which case he will have a military and possibly a widow's pension record available through NARA (National Archives and Records Administration): http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrinfo.html If I might make one further suggestion: I think it's a good practice, when you have two queries, to post them as individual messages. While you may not get any response at the time you post, we shouldn't forget that all messages remain in the list archive, and there's no way of predicting who may be digging through there in the months or years to come. Since most researchers quickly scan subject lines in an archive, the "shorter and sweeter" yours is (i.e., one target and not two), I think the more likely it is that someone will click on the message to read it. Which is, of course, the whole point of an archive … to leave a trail that others can use to find you in the future. :-) Chris

[snip] usually with ::someone who became this important, there is something on him, ::not this guy. I can't match him with anyone in my data, Carol, nor do I have an Isaac/Sophia marriage. I do have one Isaac b. 1806, according to a web page with no sources indicated, but the birthplace was Conneaut, PA, and he reportedly married one Aldula Brown. This doesn't look very promising, but the URL is (or was, in June 2001) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8754/garwood2.htm I have another Isaac with no birthdate -- I've estimated 1803 -- who is just a name ("children Moe, Curly and Isaac") in the Seaver booklet I've "reviewed" here in the past. The parents of this Isaac, Isaac (Sr.) and Faithy Seaver, married at Westminster, MA and were for at least a time at Ashburnham, MA, but were so shadowy that the History of Ashburnham gives them only a sentence -- suggesting that they lived outside the town for a few years, and then moved on. I don't consider this promising for you either -- these towns are on the MA/NH border and far from the Connecticut River, the most common migration path to VT (and thence to NY) -- but I can send what little I have if you'd like. For a problem like this I usually adopt a "start and end" strategy. That is, you look for both the individual's origins (birth or baptismal records) or at the culmination of their life, by which time they may have accumulated property and descendants and thus rate a fat biography in the published county and town histories of the time -- most of which include family histories of the town's early and prominent settlers. Either of these is more likely to succeed than looking "in the middle" -- New York state, a huge place, where his wife and children were born. Therefore, I'd try and find Isaac in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut VR. CT records can be maddeningly incomplete and spotty, but Barbour (CT Secretary of State) and his team spent decades indexing every town and church record they could dig up. These records are indexed by surname and town, and available on LDS film -- but without a town to search, you might spend years working from one corner of the state to another. But ... the listings for individual towns are increasingly finding their way online as dedicated transcriptionists post them a town at a time. The greater part of the Middlesex County, CT Barbour listings have been transcribed by Coralynn Brown and uploaded to Jane Devlin's excellent Middlesex pages at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ I would think that if you start with the "national" home pages of US GenWeb and US GenNet, you will find other towns and counties whose Barbour listings are also online. This is hardly a perfect solution, since many communities won't be online, but it's a starting place. I'd definitely keep a record of "negative research," so that as other towns are uploaded in future you don't end up re-searching those you've already looked at. It's quite surpising that a man with $50,000 of real estate in 1860 -- a lot of money back then -- wouldn't rate a bio in the History of Portage, or the Annals of Kalamazoo County, or whatever the relevant works are for that geographical area. Have you checked the LDS catalog to see what such works they have for this area? If he "dabbled in politics," have you contacted the MI State Legislature's archivist to see if he ever served in statewide office? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Chris

    3. Forwarding this courtesy of Pam Venn: ============================================ Stuart Banyar Blakely, "A History of Otego." Originally printed in 1907, the book was reproduced during the bicentennial to benefit the Otego Harris Memorial library relocation. Mill Creek, p. 77: North of the old turnpike and a little east of Charles Bowen's once stood the peculiar house of Barney Brooks. It was about forty feet long and sixteen feet wide. On this farm about 1834 a man named Burroughs claimed to have found a silver mine, having melted up his wife's spoons to "salt it down." Several caught the fever, and the farm was bought at a fabulous price. A shop was erected, a forge built and drilling and blasting continued for a year or more. Burroughs did not succeed in keeping his secret, and the bubble burst. The great silver mine of Arabia was abandoned. A large pile of almost worthless ore, containing a very small amount of lead and antimony, was left a monument to the god of greed that can still be seen. The Otsdawa, p. 89: Jair Cook, born probably near Preston, Ct., came before 1800 to the place now owned and occupied by B.A. Cook, his grandson. It has been said that Jair Cook first bought two-thirds of an acre from Cornelius Brooks; if this be true, he lived first near Otsdawa. ============================================ These are brothers Barnabas (b. 1749) and Cornelius (b. 1747), sons of Capt. Benjamin/3 Brooks and Thankful Hickox. Both brothers were born at Farmington, CT, were at Claremont, NH with their father and brother Benjamin Jr. in 1776, and after 1790 removed to New York state. The family was Loyalist, as father and two of the three sons at Claremont all refused to sign New Hampshire's Association Test (a loyalty oath to the Revolutionary government) in May 1776. Cornelius "made no association." This is the Cheshire/Wallingford line of Connecticut. Chris

    3. Hi all, I'm still plugging away at "my little project," but I did enjoy observing the previous "bragging rights contest" for most Brooks sons in a given family. Alas, the list has gone quiet again ... Why not move on to the daughters of Brooks families? Who can claim the most? (Same rules apply with the exception of the gender change.) Why should only males be considered when descendants of either sex have the genes? I think you should, however, restrict yourself to the BROOKS surname, or pretty soon you'd be spinning off into cousin Mordecai's Veebelfester family of 26 children, with only the thinnest of Brooks connections topic-wise. (If my project continues to drag on, you could then progress to largest combined families, regardless of children's gender -- I have a documented report of a Brooks family with 21 children, though most aren't identified by name or date.) Regards, Chris

I'll be happy to swap files privately if you'd like. First you might send me JUST the downline of your descent (i.e., Sarah/3, Hugo/4, Moe/5, etc.) so I can see how much of this I may now have in my data. Then I will start with the latest known person who is found in both our data, and generate an ancestral report focused on that person. I send annotated reports, sourced at the event level, and include a bibliography. I started to run a descendant report to the screen for Sarah just to get a quick head count, but aborted it at 600+ people after three subsequent generations. I think the chances are high that I could add to your knowledge, and I'm quite sure you could add to mine.
