    1. [BNE] Administrative Message -- PLEASE READ
    2. Christopher Brooks
    3. Good morning to all, I've revised the welcome message which explains how and why the list works. Please print or save a copy for future reference. 90% of the questions which recur daily are answered here. The message includes tips on how to maximize the chances of getting a response to your query. Thanks, Chris ========================================== WELCOME TO THE BROOKS FAMILIES OF NEW ENGLAND MAIL LIST! Revised 8 May 2002 **PLEASE READ AND SAVE THIS MESSAGE for your future reference.** The list administrator is Christopher Brooks [email protected] RootsWeb.com hosts the mailing list. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To SUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail to: [email protected] or [email protected] In the body and subject line of the message, include ONLY the word SUBSCRIBE. Turn OFF any email signature file you may use, as this may confuse the server which will process your command. The BROOKS-NE-L address will delivers individual messages to your e-mail address in what's called "mail" mode. When any subscriber sends a message to the list address, you'll receive an individual copy of the message. The BROOKS-NE-D address delivers a daily digest of the day's accumulated messages collected into one email. This option is handy for people who don't want multiple messages to pile up in their mailbox. To UNSUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail to: [email protected] or [email protected] (use the letter representing the mode you are subscribed in). In the body and subject line of the message, include ONLY the word UNSUBSCRIBE. Again, turn off any email signature file. If you're going on vacation and need to temporarily discontinue your mail, simply unsubscribe, then subscribe again upon your return. To POST TO THE LIST (all subscribers): [email protected] To SEARCH THE MESSAGE ARCHIVE: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/BROOKS-NE-L/ The address is case-sensitive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PURPOSE The BROOKS-NE-L Mail List was created to discuss and exchange information and resources concerning the genealogy and history of the various Brooks families of New England. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LIST POLICIES & PROTOCOL Send PUBLIC messages (information of value or potential interest to multiple people) to the list. Send PRIVATE messages (thank-yous, personal exchanges, messages about your SMITH or JONES lines, chit-chat, etc.) to the individual. NO-NOs. NEVER send the following to the list: Virus warnings "Test" messages "Me, too" messages Off-topic or cross-posted messages that some other person has asked be forwarded to all lists. Copyrighted or proprietary material Flames (more on this below) You CANNOT SEND FILE ATTACHMENTS to the list. (Rootsweb's server will block them.) If you have a file you'd like to share with other readers, announce what you have to offer in a message to the list, then send the file to those who request it via private email. KEEP QUOTING TO A MINIMUM. ("Quoting" is repeating text of the message you are replying to. Some quoting is necessary to remind others what the "thread" (topic) concerns; but quoting the entire message, particularly signature lines, is unnecessary and irritating to other readers. Please DO: USE A DESCRIPTIVE AND CURRENT SUBJECT LINE. Many of us subscribe to multiple lists, look at hundreds of messages each day, and decide, in a second or two, whether to open and read any given message SOLELY on the basis of its subject line. If your subject is "Brooks" (of no help, because that's our common topic here), or "My Brick Wall," or "Help," or "BROOKS-NE-L -REQUEST," your post will likely be deleted by many readers without ever being opened or read. Give your query a better chance of success with a meaningful and specific subject line, and do your part to keep our list archive, which is organized by subject line, well-organized and easy to use. SEPARATE "WANT LISTS" into individual queries, one family per message. If you're looking to identify six different people named BROOKS in your database, then give each one their own query and specific subject line. SOURCES and CREDITS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. If querying, tell us where you've already looked, so we don't re-plough furrowed ground. If you're sharing data from another source, include the name of the author, the full title, and the place and date of publication. If the source was simply Uncle Herk, then tell us, "Information gathered from my uncle, Hercules Veeblefester, interview, March, 1972." If you're forwarding from another list, please credit the material appropriately. This is both a common courtesy to the original submitter, and an aid to those who might want to contact the original submitter to follow up further. CONTROVERSY & DISAGREEMENT Praise in public; criticize in private. Vulgarity and personal attacks are unwelcome. Offenders will be summarily unsubscribed. If you're unhappy about some aspect of the list, please do *not* complain about it to the list as a whole. Address your concerns to the list administrator at: [email protected] If you believe that the behavior of another listreader is inappropriate, do *not* take them to task on the list. Do not forward the offending message back to the list. That just magnifies the problem. Address any such concerns to the list administrator, [email protected] and it will be my thankless task to try to resolve the issue privately. The topic of this list is historical and genealogical matters relating to the Brooks families of New England. Everything else is "off-topic". If you have a matter you'd like to discuss but are not sure it is "on topic", please check with the list administrator [email protected] before posting it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LINKS TO BOOKMARK: Genealogy Resources on the Internet: http://users.aol.com/johnf14246/gen_mail.html User Mailing Lists Hosted by RootsWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ U.S. GenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ U.S. GenNet http://www.usgennet.org/ USGS GNIS Server [U.S. place names, locations and geographical features. 2. Well, I guess I better report in here. I believe that I qualify as a member of the Pennsylvania branch of the Cheshire line. An ancestor of ours came to northwestern Pennsylvania (Warren Co.) and purchased 5,000 acres of land from an Indian named Blue Eye. I only live a few miles from there. There is a minor tourist attraction on Brooks Hill called Brooks Rocks, but I think it is no longer open to the public. There is also a small Brooks cemetery on Brooks Hill. My maternal grandmother was nee Frances Brooks. She was born in a log cabin located on Brooks Hill. Some members of our branch moved to Oregon many years back. I corresponded with one of them fairly recently. Mr. Edia Monroe Silvis

    1. [BNE] ADMINISTRATIVE NOTICE -- Please read!
    2. Christopher Brooks
    3. I have CHANGED the list's REPLY-TO DEFAULT back to "sender." All email programs don't work the same, but most of you, in replying to any list message, will now find that the address which appears in the "To" (address) line of your response is that of the INDIVIDUAL whose message you're answering. In other words, the default is now a private rather than a public reply. (Until last evening the recent default was that the reply went to the list as a whole.) So ... if you want everyone to read your reply, you'll have to OVERTYPE the individual's address with [email protected] in the address ("To") line. Sorry, there's no "one size fits all" solution, regardless of how I set up the list defaults. You will still have to take a moment to decide whether your reply is private or public, and address it accordingly. The address to send a public message to everyone on the list is [email protected] Thanks, Chris Christopher Brooks, List Administrator: ========================================== BROOKS-NE (Brooks Families of New England) ========================================== [email protected]

    1. [BNE] An apology, and time for a change
    2. Christopher Brooks
    3. I humbly apologize both to Mike Shaw, and to the list, for the absolutely inappropriate message I just inadvertantly forwarded to all of you. I have been posting private messages to the list more and more often recently. If I were more on top of things, and triple-checking what I'm doing before posting, this sort of thing would not occur. This sloppiness is inexcusable, particularly so when it comes from the list administrator. As for my temperament, there's not much I can say -- I am who I am, for better or worse -- but that in no way excuses or ameliorates my public embarrassment of another person by name. At this point, I think administration of this list would be better served by a new face -- one who doesn't have a foot in the mouth as often as I do, one who can stay more on top of things, and one who can show greater patience. If you would be interested in becoming BROOKS-NE list administrator ("listowner"), please drop me a line PRIVATELY. It's not rocket science, and basic to intermediate computer skills will suffice. A stay-at-home lifestyle (rather than frequent travel) would help in terms of daily monitoring. Again, my sincere apology. Please do NOT respond to the list regarding either this topic or my preceding message. I cannot undo it, but at least I can insist that it NOT be repeated. I've done enough damage already; please do not add to it in any way. Thanks, Chris

His name is Michael (Mike) Shaw, he lives somewhere within driving distance of Concord, NH, and he's been "my little problem" for about a year now. As far as I can tell he's not on *any* page. I've given him a ton of private coaching because he seems to struggle with both keying and understanding how the list works. I first thought he was a stroke victim or had a learning disability. But after he recently received a long-awaited NARA file, he wrote an entire paragraph to the list to announce it, complete with punctuation and an organizational sequence. SO he CAN be lucid when he takes the time and commits the effort to do so. I CANNOT get him to pay the slightest attention to subject lines, about which I've posted him dozens of times. He sends me one to five of these cryptic messages each week, and occasionally sends one to the list as well. Mike has a Brooks line that was in Williamsburg (now Brooklyn), NY and Red Bank, NJ. He's got them back to around 1800, but in that area they might come from anywhere. I've done exhaustive lookups on my own initiative to try to help him, but he doesn't follow up any of my suggestions. (The last was that he subscribe to Williamsburg and Jersey area lists.) He doesn't seem to have ever read a "how to" books for genealogy beginners, and ignores my suggestions that he do so. I really haven't a clue what to do with him, but it seems hardhearted to bounce him off the list simply because he doesn't know how to effectively participate. It took me months of repeatedly asking him for his name before he'd answer even that question. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to coach him would be welcome. I also hope your response will spur him to try harder. Chris

    3. Chris, As I was picking through the archives, I came upon your message from 24-Mar-2002 regarding Brooks connections to the LDS prophet Joseph Smith Jr. While this connection isn't the same as you posted, I thought I'd mention that this connection I'm working on (Joseph Brooks of NY, b. abt 1839, d. 1864 in civil war) married a woman connected to the prophet Joseph Smith Jr. This Joseph Brooks married Sarah Elizabeth KINGSBURY. She was a "4th cousin twice removed" of the prophet Joseph Smith Jr. She & Joseph Smith both share Robert Smith & Mary French as common ancestors. Sarah's lineage is: 1) Robert SMITH (1626-1693) m. Mary FRENCH (1634-1684) 2) their dau Mary SMITH m. John TOWNE 3) their son Israel TOWNE m. Susannah HAVEN 4) their dau Mary TOWNE m. Theodore KINGSBURY 5) their son Elijah KINGSBURY Sr. m. Lois LEONARD 6) their son Elijah KINGSBURY Jr. m. <unknown> 7) their son Alfred H. KINGSBURY m. Ann Elizabeth NEWSON 8) their dau Sarah Elizabeth KINGSBURY (1841-1915) m. Joseph BROOKS (Joseph Smith lineage is: Robert Smith > Samuel > Samuel > Asael > Joseph Sr > Joseph Smith Jr). Both of these families (Joseph Smith & Kingsbury) are well documented, except the KINGSBURY documentation I've found stops at Alfred (Alford) Kingsbury. Anyway, just thought you (or someone) might be interested in this. -Kevin Vap Overland Park, KS

    3. Hi Docdad! I'm afraid I'm always having trouble figuring out your emails. Are you chatting with one specific person or something???? If you put your comments near what they refer to they'd make sense to folks like myself, who apparently are not "in the loop" or "on the same page" as you are. Thanks.
