Hi all, I've made another site upload with many small data additions, revisions, and upgrades which cut across all of the lines. I've almost completed entry of the 1790 census (Brooks) for the New England states and New York; transcription and entry of about 75 Revolutionary War pension files (Brooks) from the same geographic area; and have completed entry of the Brooks items in the Kittery, ME VRs, and the Brooks (and spouse) entries found in the estimable Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire. Wherever this data stream intersects with the individuals who are online, you'll see the changes. (The Change Log is an easy way to say whop's been fiddled with.) There are some particular additions to the Kittery line. Where the Gen. Dict. (which runs through 1699) allowed, I've dug out the spousal ancestors of the Kittery menfolk and included them, and there's a bit more flesh of some of the individual Brooks bones. 29 people were added. One Brooks ancestor found, one Brooks ancestor lost... Dear Friends, Well, I finally had prints made of the photos I took of gravestones at Pine Island Historical Cemetery in Norwalk. While copying the information from my notes to the back of each photo, as some inscriptions were not clear, I came across the photo of one gravestone belonging to a Mary B. Brooks, wife of Moses VanHouten. At the time I visited the cemetery, for some reason, I didn't think she was part of my Brooks ancestry, even though her stone was fairly close to the others. However, lo and behold, upon searching various spellings of the VanHouten name, I found out that Eli Brooks, son of Lemuel and Lydia Benedict of Norwalk had their first child, a daughter, named Mary Borden? Bowden? Brooks on April 12, 1818. Therefore, Eli Brooks had at least five children, not four, as I previously reported back in August. Now Eli had two sons, Alanson Brooks, who died when he was 23 years old and as far as I know did not have any children, and Jeremiah T. Brooks, who had two children listed on the 1860 census, Hiram and Lucy B. I had been frantically pursuing whatever happened to Hiram, the only one left to carry on the Brooks name in my direct line. I must have been brain dead when I was entering the info into my file as I have just recently realized Hiram was born 6 years BEFORE the marriage of Jeremiah T. Brooks and Mary Ann Knapp. What a dummy! So there ended my search. Hiram was not the biological son of Jeremiah, no wonder I couldn't find him! (Hiram was the son of Mary Ann (St.John) and Charles M. Knapp (1816-1841) and I easily found him listed on censuses subsequent to 1860 as Hiram Lewis Knapp.) So, I have lost one Hiram Brooks, but gained one Mary B. Brooks... Children of Eli Brooks (8/23/1792-12/28/1857) and Nancy (Ellis?) Taylor ( 3/20/1783-1/6/1866): Mary Borden Brooks, born 1818 Jeremiah T., born 1820 Julia Ann, born 1824 Alanson, born 1826 Sarah A., born 1830 Fondly, Jeanne Jain
Jeanne Jain wrote: > Does anyone know what the "Bowden" stands for in this > Brooks Barbour (Norwalk) entry? Her mother's maiden name > was Raymond... > > Mary Bowden, d. Lemuel & Hannah, b. May 16, 1790 It's her middle name. :-) That is, she was born Mary Bowden Brooks. The practice of giving out middle names in the Brooks/New England world becomes fairly common around the time of the Revolution. Sometimes, in bad genealogical practice, you'll see maiden names written as if they were middle names. For instance, if a Mary Smith wed John Guggleheim, you might see her confusingly misnamed as Mary Smith Guggleheim. The maiden name should properly be placed within parentheses, as Mary (Smith) Guggleheim. Chris
Dear Friends, Does anyone know what the "Bowden" stands for in this Brooks Barbour (Norwalk) entry? Her mother's maiden name was Raymond... Mary Bowden, d. Lemuel & Hannah, b. May 16, 1790 Thanks for any help. Fondly, Jeanne
This includes only people in the Kittery line. Errors have been corrected, new sources (mainly pension files and census) and relationships added, and about 40 new people added. In the course of changing my web pages around from the .org to the .us address, I had to regenerate the website pages in order to update all the links. Confused where the reference to the Whitney Family fits in on your email. Is "The Whitney Family of Connecticut" the title of the book in which the following references appear? I am in DC at the moment, but I think we may have that book in CT. Your email read: "The Whitney family of Connecticut, and its affiliations: being an attempt to trace the descendants, as well in the female as the male lines, of Henry Whitney, from 1649 to 1878 : to which is prefixed some account of the Whitneys of England New York: Priv. print., 1878; Pg 190" I believe this Whitney Family is one of my lines. The following is from the genealogy done by Donald Lines Jacobus for my grandmother, Elizabeth Brooks Chatfield, daughter of Elizabeth Laura Brooks and Henry William Whitney, the last ones listed below, and a couple of dates I have added as found. Linda Hull needs my attention one of these days! Cheshire records are often missing. Henry Whitney, died 1673 John Whitney, died 1720. Married March 17, 1675. Elizabeth Smith, who died after 1741 Josiah Whitney, died about 1750. Married Oct. 30, 1729, Eunice Hanford. Henry Whitney, born Feb. 19, 1736; died May 1, 1811. Married about 1761, Eunice Clark, born April 15, 1746; died Aug. 21, 1794; daughter of Wm. Clark William Clark Whitney, born April 11, 1762; died Oct. 26, 1838. Married Mary Thompson Eunice Whitney, born April 5, 1794. Married June 4, 1818, Zina Chatfield. Henry William Chatfield, born Sept. 4, 1819; died May 13, 1819; married March 8, 1892, Elizabeth Laura Brooks, born 1829, died July 12, 1899, daughter of David Brooks, born July 26, 1791; died July 24, 1873, and Linda Hull, born c. 1814. Maybe this will help someone, and I can look up the references if they came from the Whitney book if someone needs more. Cheshire Jean
Good morning, I have good news and bad news regarding the Tributaries website. The domain name Tributaries.org, registration of which was to expire December 14th, was not reregistered on time. The expired domain name has to sit in the orphans gallery of an internet name registry for 80 days before it can be reclaimed. We are carefully watching its status and expect to re-grab this domain as soon as it comes out of exclusion, presumably about 80 days from 12/14, or at the start of March. The good news is that I have grabbed a similar domain name, tributaries.us, to use as a replacement in the meantime. Please do these steps: (1) Delete your browser's bookmark(s) if any to www.tributaries.org (2) Browse to www.tributaries.us and BOOKMARK the page. If/when I can recover the .org name, I will notify the list and we'll do this dance again. My personal email addresses, for the time being, are therefore: jose357@adelphia.net brooks-ne-admin@rootsweb.com trib@tributaries.us (Email to the new .us address might bounce for a day or two until this domain is registered across the internet.) Actually, I kind of like the new .us address. (Reflecting my lifelong interest in puns) something like Tributaries R Us? Chris |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Christopher Brooks BROOKS Families of New England http://www.tributaries.us ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
For some reason the domain tributaries.org has disappeared this morning. The web site is therefore inaccessible, and email addressed to that domain in not working either. Any mail to me personally should be sent to jose357@adelphia.net until I resolve the problem. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Debbye Lansing dug up this scholarly article, which treats the development of rural furniture styles. Donna K. Baron "Definition and Diaspora of Regional Style: The Worcester County Model." http://www.chipstone.org/publications/1995AF/1995barontext.html The Brooks excerpt: "John Loring Brooks (b. 1793), the son of Sterling chairmaker Ammi Brooks (1765-1815), worked as a chairmaker in Portland, Maine, by 1815. Before 1823 he worked in partnership with another Massachusetts born chairmaker, John Bradley Hudson (fig. 23). Sterling, Massachusetts, native Samuel Kilburn White (1798-1849) worked in Maine by 1820 (fig. 24). Both he and Brooks moved when in their early twenties, presumably after completing their apprenticeships. Maine probably afforded greater opportunities and less competition for chairmakers than Worcester County." Note that both the Woburn and Concord lines were chairmakers in Worcester County. The John Loring identified was a 7th-generation descendant of the Woburn line. Chris
