The whole thing is appalling. Mrs. Walmart can acquire it from her millions for her proposed Arkansas Museum and put it along side the famous painting she stole out from under everybody with her millions to the NY Public Library. The Library set a dangerous precedent when it sold the Durand Hudson River School painting and other works in such a way. I emailed the National Archives to be sure they are aware of this story. Not sure they purchase such documents, but a place for the word to spread. Cheshire Jean
This morning's Boston Globe reports: ===================== In 1629, colonists landed in Salem bearing the Royal Charter of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay, granting permission ''for the planting, ruling, ordering, and governing of Newe England in America." Massachusetts, as we know it, was born. And now, that mother of all real estate contracts, not to mention a foundational document in US history, could be up for sale. The Salem Athenaeum has made preliminary inquiries about selling its copy of the Massachusetts Bay Charter to raise funds for its endowment. Critics fear that the document could end up in private hands or possibly a foreign country. ===================== Full story at http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/03/2 1/colonial_charter_may_go_on_sale/ ===================== Chris
Hi Joyce, I have used the NEHGS for a little over a year now and have found it very useful. It is slow sometimes, but for the most part easy to use. I just did a search on NEHGS and it is much slower today, 7:40 PM on the West Coast, than usual. I suspect it is like Chris indicated there are a lot of people trying to take advantage of the free time. I have found NEHGS very helpful for my Massachusetts ancestors and somewhat helpful for some in NH and Maine. I was able to track several family back to the 1630s in Massachusetts just from the Register. The vital statistics they have available are very useful as well, especially the Mass Vital Records 1841 to 1910. For many of the indexed entries you can view the original document and possibly get the names of parents, place of birth etc. But, again this is for ancestors who lived in Massachusetts. NEHGS has also been very helpful because it provides access to Heritage Quest, which is great. I am sorry it hasn't worked well for you during this time, but I would not judge it by this one experience. Chris is right sometimes if you use it at off times it is much faster. Best of luck in your search. Take care, Joyce Joyce & Bill Manuel <southern_heart_ranch@juno.com> wrote: Well I am in on the NEHGS site (free for the 2 days)and I am not at all happy. Joyce, I expect you are one of thousands of people trying to access the site during the freebie period. What I do in cases like these is to think about time zones, and then try to log on when there will be the least traffic. Sometimes for me that means an all-nighter, or getting up in the a.m. while it's still dark. I guess it depends on how much you want to view the data. You're also paying the price for a dialup internet connection. The folks who shell out each month for a broadband connection (which I realize is not available in many areas) are least likely to get dropped by the server during high traffic, becuase they can respond faster. Usually drops are triggered by inaction, or by long download and access times during which the server may decide you've died and gone to heaven. Personally, I try to avoid using vulgarities in public or print because they can/will offend others with different sensibilities from my own. Hope you will do the same in future when posting. Chris, I should have put in my post why this Archibald isn't likely to be the one I was looking for. The fact that he died in 1862 was actually in his "favor" because my great-grandfather married a Brooks widow in 1864. But this Archibald Brooks was born and lived in Saratoga County, NY whereas the Archibald Brooks I was looking for was in Lexington, Greene County, NY as were his parents and older siblings. Hi again! I googled Randolph County, Indiana and found this site, www.rootsweb.com/~inrandol/. It shows the Buena Vista Cemetery in Union Township, Randolph County, where Thomas Brooks is buried. It also gives the caretakers phone number. Either the genealogists at the rootsweb site or the Randolph County Historical and Genealogical site will be able to help you. Good luck and keep pecking at those walls. Hi, Jane! I'd rule out Magdelene as the grandmother. She would have been born in 1784. That would make her 10 or 11 when Thomas the 3rd was born. Maybe a older sister of Thomas'. Have you tried any of the small town historical societies to see if there's a Bio on Thomas? I have a friend who hit a brick wall then hit paydirt with the Warren County (Ohio) Historical Society. Also, have you tried probate records? Hello, I am looking for information on my 3rd great-grandfather Thomas Brooks who died in Randolph County, Indiana on 28 Jan. 1868. Thomas was b. c1794/1795 in New Jersey (1850 census) or New York (1860 census). According to his widow's pension papers, she was Thomas's 3rd wife. I know nothing of wife 1 & 2. Thomas served in the War of 1812 in a regiment organized in Urbana, Champaign County, OH. On 29 Mar. 1836 he was married to Susannah (Kimbrough) Holcraft/Holdcraft in Clinton County, OH. They removed to Randolph County, Ind. shortly after their marriage and were enumerated there in the 1840 census through the end of each of their lives. The only clue that I have regarding Thomas's life before his marriage to Susannah is that he had a daughter Margaret Brooks, b. abt 1822-24 in Ohio who DID NOT appear with her father and step-mother until the 1870 census. I have not been able to find her in the previous census (1850-1860) although there is a young woman named Margaret Brooks in the 1850 census in Alexander Twp., Athens County, OH living with Magdalene Brooks, age 66, b. New Jersey (perhaps a grandmother?) who could be her. Nothing in the 1860 census. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, --Jane Torres
