I have two Roswell Brooks in my line. One is the son of Thomas Brooks, the revolutionary soldier who died in Chenango County, New York. And Thomas' grandson, son of Socrates. My grandfather, Castello Holford, married Samantha Jeanette (Jennie) Brooks in Grant County, Wisconsin. They were married in the house of her Aunt, Lucy Brooks Cooper. The marriage certificate states that Jennie's uncle, Jesse Brooks performed the ceremony. I am definitely an amateur researcher, but here is my line. Did you see, perhaps two weeks ago, the several posts from Cliff Williams? He has a Roswell who, with his brother Loomis, served in the army at the Buffalo (NY) Barracks from 1839-44. Other than that, I've only seen the given name Roswell once, as I also posted several weeks ago -- as the husband of a woman, b. 1818, buried (no date) at Dover, MA. From the given names, particularly Roswell and Abiram, I would guess this family is in one of the CT lines. I suspect Roswell and Loomis of Buffalo are too. I can't match up Noah exactly. I've got one born in 1781, but he's buried in Haddam Neck, CT, not western NY. The other possibility by date was born at Scituate, MA, lived in South Boston, and was a mariner who is well accounted for. If you want to send me locations and dates offlist, I'd be happy to run a census index search for you if that would help. Tryphena died 24 Aug 1788 [Warren VR, 162, citing her gravestone]. I show one child candidate of this marriage, Betsy, wife of John Strickland, whom I got from you. :-) I have Betsy's DOB as say 1780, which would make Tryphena her mother. >2. In previous correspondence you had Betsy marrying a Henry Washburn in 1805, which is why I assigned her a say 1780 birth date, which caused me to assign Tryphena Hinds as her mother. But if Betsy only marries once, to John Strickland in 1828, then an 1801 birth date makes sense ... I guess. I'm obviously behind the eight-ball here, research-wise. Or else you're rearranging the puzzle pieces again, Doris. Either way, or both ways, you've lost me. The important thing is that you don't lose you ... :-) >Anna Neavens m 2) William Collester (date unknown). This date *is* known. Warren marriages, 87: Brooks, [Wid. in int.] Anna and William Collester, July 25, 1832. Caleb Brooks obviously died before his widow's remarriage, but I have found no death record. He may have died at Enfield or Greenwich, whose vitals I haven't seen. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure that either town's vitals have ever been published. Sorry to be so slow in responding. Chris
Most of our readers "lurk" -- meaning to read other folks' messages without joining in. Those of us who don't lurk have no way of knowing who the rest of you are, genealogically speaking, even though you might be the missing link in other researcher's puzzle, or they in yours. I think it's time for a listreaders' census. This will be painless for each of you -- all you have to do is to send me a blank email with an appropriate subject line. I will collate and broadcast the results. This will be nearly painless for me if everyone will follow these directions. We'll do this OFF the list. I really am hoping for 100% participation here. :-) *** Fire up a blank email, and address it to [email protected] *** Now enter one subject line per #2, #3, or #4, whichever fits. Leave the body of the message blank. 2. IF YOU HAVE CONNECTED TO A FOUNDER: In the SUBJECT LINE, type "I'm researching _____", replacing the underscores with one or more of the following as appropriate: Capt. Thomas Brooks Henry Brooks of Woburn William Brooks of Scituate Gilbert Brooks of Scituate William Brooks of Springfield Thomas Brooks of Haddam John Brooks of Cheshire Henry Brooks of Cheshire The Kittery, ME line 3. IF YOU HAVEN'T CONNECTED TO A FOUNDER: In the SUBJECT LINE, type "My research locus is ______" replacing the underscores with a location in the format, TOWN, COUNTY, STATE. For Steuben County, NY, type, "Steuben County, NY." Or Hornellsville, Steuben, NY. Or NY State. I need to be able to distinguish between town, county and state names. Enter the earliest known location for your ancestor. Only ONE place per email, please. 4. IF YOU'RE NEW TO BROOKS RESEARCH: Type NEW in the SUBJECT LINE. *** Now send the sucker. You're done! If you meet both qualifications #2 and #3 -- you know you descend from Thomas of Haddam, but are also researching Haddam as well as Thomas -- then you can send me two emails, one person and one location. Same if you're researching a county in NY and one in OH -- send an email for each. I'm sure I haven't covered every possibility, but we need to keep this simple. If you're researching only Famous Brooks Podiatrists, and don't have a name or location focus, then I don't really know where to put you. :-) It's now Friday evening. The polls will be open for one week, until next Friday night, when I'll compile the results into name/address lists to share. If this works I'll do another census in the near future focused on unusual given names. ("I'm looking for Solon Brooks of Ohio.") Any information would >be helpful. There was a branch of (probably) the Woburn line of Henry/1 Brooks in Portland in the right time period. One William C. Brooks, perhaps to probably the son of Jonas/5 Brooks and Joanna CUMMINGS, was born in 1777 at Malone, NY, but married, in 1801, in Maine, where he remained, Hannah POLAND. They had two sons at Portland, 1802 and 1806, but each of these settled in the country on a farm. I double-checked, and each had a child within nine months or so of your Bronson's DOB. Another Portland presence, at least for a generation, was the line of Cotton Brown/6 Brooks, descended in the Concord line of Capt. Thomas Brooks. A wealthy merchant, and the grandfather of Rev. Phillips Brooks, he died at Portland in 1834. Of his three sons, William Gray was in Boston, George (b. 1797, Haverhill, MA) disappears, and Charles (b. 1795, Haverhill, disappears as well.) More accurately, I haven't followed them beyond recording their births. There are other Brooks connections to Portland I haven't clarified. One John G. Brooks, a. 21, of Portland, died in Worcester, MA in 1839. Samuel Reeves/7 Brooks married at Portland in 1842 -- born in Medford, MA, he was probably in business with his cousin Cotton Brown Brooks in Portland. Even more exotically, two Brooks sisters, whose family originated in Exeter, NH, and who were born on a cotton plantation near Natchez, MS, returned to New England to marry INGRAHAM brothers of Portland, but the dates are likely after 1840, and, obviously, any offspring would carry the Ingraham surname. Finally, Larry Wert, whom I have lost contact with, sent me this several years back, which he attributed to Lloyd O. Poland, The Polands of Essex Co., MA (1981): "A Wm. Brooks was listed in 1823-1827 Portland directories; Truckman, York St.. 1841 directory, cooper, Sumner St. 1858-9 directory, William A., Clerk, Cumberland St." Sorry I couldn't find anything more tangible. Have you checked the Portland area census for BROOKS heads of household? BTW, I left the subject line typo in place so that all messages on this thread will sort together properly in the archive. :-) Chris

Hi: I'm looking for information about a Susan J Brooks, b Ellisburg, NY who had a son named Wallace Strickland b 4 Jan 1881, Warren, Worcester, MA. The father was John Strickland, carpenter, b Warren. I have no further information about Wallace. Susan might have been called Jennie or Jane - at least those are the names of John Strickland's wife in the 1880 and 1900 censuses, respectively. The 1900 census shows John's wife, Jane, b Oct 1847. There was a 13 year old daughter, Nettie M. John was considerably older than Jane and she may have been left a widow. The census record shows that Jane was the mother of 1 child, 1 living - this makes me wonder if she is the same person as Susan J Brooks. Greeting listers, I would like to throw a name into the wind and see if we have any hits. BRONSON W. He married (2) MARY ORSILA GOODRICK 4 July 1871 in Cresco, Howard, Iowa, daughter of ABRAHAM GOODRICK and MARY BOSWORTH. She was born 5 June 1843 in Mooers, Clinton, New York, and died 1 October 1899 in Jackson, Madison, Tennessee. I am looking for any information on his parents. All I know is that he left home at an early age and by 1850 was living in Nunda, NY. In the 1900 Census he claimed that his father was born in Maine and his mother in New York. Any information would be helpful. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! Personals. http://personals.yahoo.com

Dear Rick Harwood and David Hoffman: In connection with Rick's list of Unconnected Brooks, I'd like to offer some other data for your consideration about the parents of James Smith. Simon Smith was his father; I believe his mother was Elizabeth Wells, not Alice or Alice Wells. Torrey is the source of the naming of Simon's wife as Alice - I do not have the new CD from NEHGS which includes Torrey's sources, but Torrey is not an original source. Best one probably is the Haddam Church Records which calls the wife of this Simon Smith Elizabeth Wells. (Simon is the son of an earlier Simon, a first settler of Haddam, and my ancestor.) Torrey also suggests that Elizabeth Wells is the wife of Simon's brother Benjamin, but he is the only one that I have ever seen to make that suggestion. After returning to the census film and giving it a better look, Libofmich 1870 census flim #666-667 page 558R...I could see where my first look was incorrect. Very hard to read. My Asa's wife was Elizabeth age 57. With a son Asa age 12. *Asa's Grandfather was John 27 Dec 1728 who married Eunice Darby b 1734/1737..Concord, Middlesex Co., MA. *I am not so sure now that we have the same Asa/Asahel/Ashel. Also look at Ashel II as a possible son b Northville, Fulton Co., NY he had two wives Grace E Cook and Agnes...son Ashel W and 10 more. Ashel II may have been from an early marriage by Ashel before marriage to Betsy. They were in Sarasota Co., NY next to where Ashel II settled in Fulton Co., NY Again I am guessing.........ages fit ... Ancestry.com only shows Asa Brooks b 1761 had 3 children Asa/Ezra/Amos and Asa /Ashel b 9 June 1790 in Halifax, Windham, VT Ezra 1792 & Amos 1793. If this Asa/Ashel is the right one he would be 30 in 1820 - old enough to have fathered Ashel II with a first spouse??? My name is Bryce Ruddock.....my ancestry is traced back through MI; Charles Livingston Brooks b 1834 in Steuben, Oneida Co. NY, Isaac Brooks, b 1806 in Steuben, Oneida Co, NY. Bryce (what is your last name?) sent me this offlist, but I know the thread will be of interest to others, so I'm moving it to the list. This list is set up so that any reply to a message defaults to its *sender* and not the list. I've forgotten myself a few times and almost done so a gazillion times, but you have to type the list address into the To: line in your email header. Otherwise, your reply will be private and never seen by the rest of the listreaders here. The address to send to the list is [email protected] Should anyone forget, the address is also in the welcome message you received when you subscribed, which of course you saved. :-) I've changed the subject line to reflect the fact that I've also changed the focus a generation. NY his son Charles L married Jeanette Powers and moved to Marshall, MI abt 1834 . . . appear in 1850 census in MI ================================ We've had a fair amount of interest, both on the list and off, in John/5 BROOKS, a Revolutionary soldier of Westminster, MA who married Eunice DARBY. Some of our subscribers descend from this marriage; several others thought they did, but found they don't. This is the line of Capt. Thomas/1 Brooks. John and Eunice married in January, 1754. I find the births of seven children recorded in Westminster vitals; the first in 1756, the last in 1772. Asa/6, the third, was born 30 Apr 1761, served two enlistments in the Revolution (1779-80), and married, 11 Mar 1788 at Westminster, Rebecca SAWYER. The marriage record notes him of Halifax. Census indexes record the presence of an Asa Brooks at Halifax in 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820. (I haven't checked film.) He died back at Westminster 14 Sep 1843 [Westminster VR, 215]. At first I thought your Asa was a continuation of Asa/6 -- assuming that Rebecca Sawyer died, and that he married again. But you don't provide a date for the marriage to Betsey MEARS -- which would have to be after 1772 to be consistent with the proven 1st marriage, but would also have to be early enough for Asa to still be of fathering age. What bothers me more is that your list of Asa's siblings has 11 children (4 more than I find birth records). And of your list of 11, I can match only 2 (John and Ezra) to Westminster records. My question is whether these aren't two different men. A lot hinges on the Brooks/Mears marriage date. Chris, In response to your message of today (Subject: Descendants of John Brooks/Eunice Darby of Westminster) -- Bryce's e-mail which you have included in your message was in response to my query of October 14th regarding my Asa/Asahel Brooks and Betsy Mears. Portions from my query of the 14th are as follows: > Asa/Asahel Brooks > b circa 1800 Mass (his age and birthplace are consistent in the > 1850, 1860, and 1870 census) > d sometime in the 1870's probably in Iowa; > m circa mid 1820's probably in Vermont to Betsy Mears. Betsy b > circa 1804 in Mass daughter of Isaac and Polly (Longgon) Mears of Mass. > (The Mears line is in Middlesex Co, Tewksbury, Mass for many years). > Isaac Mears moved his family to Vermont circa 1810. > Known children of Asa/Asahel and Betsy Brooks: > (1) Harvey Brooks b circa 1827, NY > (2) Polly Brooks b 1828 NY, *** my ancestor > (3) Henry Brooks b circa 1833 Penn > I have not yet located a marriage date for my Asa Brooks and Betsey Mears. Their first known child was born circa 1827 NY. Betsey was in her parents household in 1820 VT, Bennington County, Sandgate Twp; so I am assuming that they married sometime after 1820 and before 1826. I thank those that responded. I am still searching for where my Asa belongs! Martha Heinrichs
Forwarding this from Jean McKee <[email protected]> ======================================= Here is something on a Stephen Brooks in Steuben Co as second child of Abraham Brooks. I don't know whether this is any help to you, but I noticed from Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol. 1 compiled by Donald Lines Jacobus, the noted CT. genealogist, that Abraham Brooks, b.22 April 1743, baptized June 1743 CC (I think this is Congregational Church, but forgot the code), died 16 March 1805 age 63 in Steuben, NY., married 5 March 1767 Deborah Hungerford. Children, births recorded Farmington Vital Statistics: 1. Vashti, 20 Sept 1767. 2. STEPHEN, 13 May 1769 died 19 June 1849 age 80 Steuben, NY, 3. Jerusha, 17 Feb. 1772. 4. Cyrus, 2 Oct 1773. 5. Abraham, 23 Oct. 1775. 6. Deborah, 9 Mar 1781. The first 5 were bapitzed Bristol; also 7. Orrin, 28 May 1786. The ancestors go from Henry Brooks, died 1713, who came to New Haven, CT. and shows up in the records about 1685, and is one of my ancestors, to son Thomas Brooks born 27 March 1679, died 20 July 1732, Lieutenant, married Mar 1702 Martha (Pardee) Hotchkiss, born 14 Dec. 1683, died c. 1755, then Thomas' first child STEPHEN born 28 May 1703, baptized 20 June 1775, died 14 May 1773, married 6 May 1725 Hannah Barnes born 31 May 1702 who had 8 children the last being Abraham.
I found a listing on Ancestery.com for David Brooks in the 1840 census for Neversink, Sullivan, NY. If anyone has access to this census, I would appreciate knowing the data shown for him. Supposedly, he's listed on page 053. Thanks for any help you are able to provide. Ron Hughes
"Hello again Cousins!" I am thinking that we are looking at some of the same family. Please check out what I have for this family and compare against what you had written below. Can't help but believe that we are likely looking at one and the same family??? Descendants of William Harrison BROOKS and Belle BRUNSON 1. William Harrison1 BROOKS, born abt 1833 in , Onondaga, NY; died in , , MI; buried in Vandalia, Cass, MI, son of Mark F. BROOKS and Mary Catharine WILCOX. He married abt 1869 Belle BRUNSON, born abt 1851 in , , IN. Notes for William Harrison BROOKS 1860 Cass Co., MI census, Penn TWP, page 261. 1880 Livingston Co., MI census, Putnam TWP, 16-195/17-27. Buried at Young's Prarie Cemetery per Jack D. BROOKS, great-grandson. Children of William Harrison BROOKS and Belle BRUNSON were as follows: 2 i John M.2 BROOKS, born abt 1870 in , , MI. 3 ii Samuel W.2 BROOKS, born abt 1872 in , , MI; died 18 Oct 1924; buried in Cassopolis, Cass, MI. He married Kate (---), born abt 1875 in , , KS; died 23 Mar 1956; buried in Cassopolis, Cass, MI. If my theory is correct this is the same Samuel BROOKS who died at age 53 in 1924, and is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery. 1920 Cass Co., MI census, 8-127/2-66. 4 iii Edward T.2 BROOKS, born abt 1874 in , , MI; died 1946. 5 iv Roy J.2 BROOKS, born abt 1877 in , , MI. 6 v William H.2 BROOKS, born 1879 in , , MI. 7 vi Clarence2 BROOKS, born Est 1881/85; died abt 1978/79. 8 vii Jack2 BROOKS, born Est 1870/1885. I am not absolutely certain that Jack is not one and the same individual as John M. BROOKS! The above William Harrison BROOKS was the older brother of my family' Samuel Bingham BROOKS, who was one of my second great-grandfathers. Caleb Brooks, b 22 Apr 1745, Worcester Co., MA. Does anyone know when or where he died? Does anyone know of children other than those below? Also, is there any information about the 3 children of Caleb and Abigail Bailey? Caleb had 3 wives: 1. Tryphena Hinds, m 13 Mar 1777. I don't know of any children of this marriage. 2. Abigail Bailey, m 27 Jan 1791. 3 children: Orville, b 13 Mar 1795; Romanazaw (?), b 28 Sep 1797; Alphonso, b 20 Jul 1800. 3: Anna Neavens, m 13 Apr 1801. One known child, Betsey, b 14 Nov 1801. There is another possible child, Cinderella Brooks (b abt 1818) but if she really is a child of Caleb and Betsey it is likely that there would have been other children in between. This Cinderella m Harvey Olds in 1841 Anna Neavens m 2) William Collester (date unknown). In 1850 William Collester and wife Ann were living adjacent to the Harvey Olds family in Ware, Hampshire, MA. In 1860 Anna Collester was living with the Harvey Olds family in Ware. That is why I wonder if she was the mother of Cinderella Brooks Olds. Anne Willis <[email protected]> passes this along in answer to a question I asked recently, about a source for the fact that John was in the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company. The company still exists, BTW, although its function is purely ceremonial, and probably has been since the time at which its members renamed themselves Ancient and Honorable. Venerating the past is always a sign of separation from it. [Brooks's Law] :-) Anyway ... >Info on John Mousall....Nat'l Soc.
