A list census "vote" with the subject line above has separated from its writer due to my rough handling of the mail. Would whoever sent this vote please do so again, so that I'll have your email address with it? It's Steve Hoffman, isn't it? Thanks, Chris
Not sure where this stands, but it has occurred to me that I have a Gazetteer of the State of New York done in 1860 with "A Complete History and Description of Every County, City, Town, Village, and Locality." It has a lot of information, so I would be glad to see what it says about Steuben in Oneida County. Various of my family went into NY State from here, such as Micah Brooks who founded Brooks Grove, and is mentioned in the Gazeteer, so you can see how detailed it is. I worked in NYC and the State in my past political days, so very familiar with all the locals.
Please go to this web site for map of Oneida Co. Upper right is Steuben TWP between Remsen and Western NE of Rome http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyoneida/maps/ Steuben is an original land grant. This Lemuel comes up every few months. Steve Shutt, who is new to both the list and to genealogy, sent along a file -- partly his own findings, and partly from his grandmother's DAR application, if I'm not mistaken -- which identifies Lemuel as the son of a William Brooks, of the Springfield line of William/1 Brooks and Mary Burt. Lemuel's father is said to have been William, of Enfield, CT. The map reveals Enfield next to Suffield, which was an economic satellite of Springfield, MA, just across the colony's border. The pieces fit so nicely, geographically and chronologically, that I thought I would circulate this working hypothesis on Lemuel's origins. ========================= Known/proven from vital records, etc. -------------------------------------------------- 1. William Brooks (1610? - 1688) + Mary BURT 2. Benjamin Brooks + Mary BARNARD 3. * William Brooks, b. 1 Aug 1708, Springfield and then nothing further. From Kathleen W. Talley DAR app., 1980: -------------------------------------------------- * William Brooks, father of Lemuel, m. 1731 at Enfield, CT, Esther KIBBE. ========================= Steve's data suggests that the asterisked Williams above are the same man. I think he's right. I think Lemuel's ancestral line is 1. William Brooks (1610? - 1688) + Mary BURT 2. Benjamin Brooks (1671 - 1755) + Mary BARNARD 3. William Brooks, b. 1 Aug 1708, Springfield + Esther KIBBE 4. Lemuel, b. 1748 Enfield, d. 1831 OH + Keziah HASKILL, Esther SPRAGUE William/1 was approximately 61 years old when Benjamin was born. He did not marry until 1654, and then proceeded to sire 16 natural children through 1679, when he would have been about 69 years of age. At least, that's according to the gospel to date. I have some alternative thoughts which I'll be sharing when they're ready. In reference to the Jacobus pages: First, I'd like to keep this off the list. I imagine the book is still in copyright. Fair use allows individuals to privately share brief excerpts of books under copyright. The laws do not permit public sharing without permission. Therefore, when I have something like this I offer it privately, and any discussion of it which may ensue between individuals should like wise be private, I think. Nonetheless, to allay questions about was and wasn't included: From Jean McKee and Kathy Chiappetta I have pages 336 - 345 of Vol. 2, which covers Bronson to Broughton, and Brooks in between. Each researcher who asked will get a complete set of these pages. I DON'T have abbreviations, additions or corrections. Kathy, scratch that request, if you will; I'll contact Jean off the list and get back to the list. Chris
Today I went to the Cheshire Library and copied out the list of abbreviations for Families of Ancient New Haven. I also found two pages of "Additions and Corrections" that might be needed. I wonder whether you have the first page of the Brooks line from Henry. I think I did not send that to Chris in error. It should run from page 336 to 345. So, send me your address and request by e-mail at [email protected] and I will mail you whatever you need.
Thanks so much for the above papers. Being a novice at this, I wondered if you could explain some of the abbreviations. NHV=New Haven V----- WV , CC, HV, WatV, CT1, CT2, NHT1, F,No HV, NoHx (In the medical field this would be no history), FarmV,CV, NHC2, EHC, EHT. Thanks for your help. Judy Brooks Truchon
Would the person who wrote me about this individual please contact me offlist? I wrote a detailed response profiling two Jabez/Sarah Brooks couples who might be David's father. Unfortunately, it appears I sent the response to myself, while deleting the original query. I have too many email accounts for my own good, I guess. Thanks, Chris

Good wishes for a lovely grandchild, may you enjoy him thoroughly! Have forwarded to a friend the note from Lynn Ellis Brooks on the Anna Terry line back to Ann Marbury Hutchinsan (Virginia). The friend happens to be Marbury Hutchinson! "Hutch" also lives in Virginia! He can contact Lynn if he so desires.
Dear Chris, CONGRATULATIONS! Grandchildren are wonderful, and isn't that what all this family history is all about - the continuation of the line. You would have been remiss not sharing your good news with us. Enjoy! Sincerely, Anne Benson

... to inform you that Isaiah Ian DiChristopher Brooks, son of Jeremiah Copeland Brooks and Rebecca DiChristopher, entered the world Monday evening about 6 pm, weighing 8 lbs. 4 oz. My first grandchild, he descends lineally from Capt. Thomas/1 Brooks of Concord, MA, and collaterally, through the NORCROSS and MERRIAM families, from Henry/1 Brooks of Woburn. To those whom I've promised lookups, searches or responses, you'll just have to wait a little longer as I tend to family business, in the immediate and literal sense. :-) Jacobus copies are enveloped and addressed and will go out tomorrow. I'll see what else I can squeeze out this evening, sandwiched around another maternity ward visit, but after that I'm liable to be scarce for several days. I am breaking my own list rule -- no "personal business" here on the list -- but I have run clean out of local folks to tell. :-) Chris
OK. I confess. I've been one of the "lurkers" of the BROOKS-NE-L listserv that Christopher Brooks mentioned. I appreciate Christopher's fine efforts and the great contributions from the group in helping define the different lines of New England Brooks. In case it's of interest to any sub-lines of William Brooks of Springfield, here's my lineage. I have the hard copy "The Brooks Family of Bethel, Vermont" by Chad and Robert Brooks, 1995, copies of which I can send any interested parties. (Chad --now deceased-- and Robert did a lot of excellent work, tracing the maternal lines as well.) I'm not a trained genealogist, so please excuse my lack of proper form/notation. Thanks. Lynn Ellis Brooks =============================================================== William Brooks (1610-1688) and Mary Burt (1634-1689) Benjamin Brooks, Sr. (1671-1755) and Mary Barnard Benjamin Brooks, Jr. (1693-) and Hannah Walker Edward Brooks (1727-1776) and Anna Hayward (1733-1819) Reuben Brooks (1763-1843) and Anna Terry (1774-) Harrison Brooks (1813-1881) and Sarah E. He married Mary Burt in Springfield, October 18, 1654; In 1658, he moved to Deerfield, where in died December 30, 1688. The Anna Terry line traces back to Ann Marbury Hutchinson, a very notable woman. I'm especially interested in pushing the genealogy of William Brooks (1610-1688) and Mary Burt (1634-1689) further back. Given the ravages of the War of 1812 and the American War of the States, hunting for William in Virginia is difficult. Thank you for your time and patience. LEB [Mr.] Lynn E. Through the kindness of Kathy Chiappetta and Jean McKee, I have photocopies of the BROOKS pages from Donald Lines Jacobus, Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol. 2 (1939), as well as an index to all BROOKS mentions in any volume of the set. I haven't had a chance to go through these in detail, but the coverage seems to include not only New Haven families but the Wallingford/Cheshire line in quite a bit of depth, and apparently any Brooks who passed through the area of study. For instance, Moses Brooks, who lived at Montague, MA, turns out to be born at Wallingford, and he's in here. Jacobus, as has been so often said, was a meticulous researcher whose specialty was Connecticut. Throw out those undocumented Ancestral File fantasies, and get down with D.L.J.! :-) If you are researching CT and would like me to mail you a copy of these pages, please email me offlist with an ALL-CAPS subject line of SEND JACOBUS NEW HAVEN. Don't forget to include your name and mailing address. Thanks, Chris
Phoebe Cortessis sent this, which I'm forwarding to the list. Before some wag asks, I am *not* 200 years old, nor am I related to the Christopher Brooks mentioned below. :-) But this might help someone poking around in VT or Berrien County, MI. Chris ================================== Portrait and Biographical Record of Berrien and Cass Counties, 1893 pp. 574-577 John J. BROOKS, a prosperous farmer residing in Watervliet Township, Berrien County, was born in Burlington, Vt., June 24, 1829, and is the son of Christopher and Eliza (Nobles) Brooks. His paternal grandfather, John Brooks, was born in the North of Ireland, whence abut 1826 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Ontario, Canada, locating with his son John upon a farm, where he remained until his death. In religion, he was prominently identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a man of earnest life and character. Christopher Brooks was born in Ireland and accompanied his father to America, where he settled in Burlington, Vt. Later he removed to Richmond, and thence to Jericho, Vt., where his death occurred in 1885, at the age of four-score years and two. He was three times married. Of his first union ten children were born, of whom the following were reared to manhood and womanhood: Mary, Margaret, Noble, James, Christopher, John and Thomas. William died at the age of fourteen. The second wife of Christopher Brooks was a Mrs. Stockwell, who bore him one child, Eliza. Afterward he was united with Mrs. Mary Morehead, and they became parents of three children, Isaac, Henry, and Columbia, who died in childhood. The first wife of Christopher Brooks was the mother of our subject. She was born in Ireland, and died in Vermont in 1839. In her religious affiliations, she belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which Mr. Brooks was also identified. At the age of eleven years our subject left home and has earned his support since that early age. Until he was fourteen he made his home with William Williams, for whom he worked for his board and clothes. Afterward he worked for wages until he was twenty-seven, when he commenced to work at this trade of a carpenter. He followed that occupation until 1865, and since that time he devoted his attention to agriculture. In 1854, Mr. Brooks moved to Massachusetts and three years later he sought a home in the far West, as Michigan was then considered. He went first to Paw Paw, and from there moved to Watervliet Township in 1856. He has been prominently connected with public matters of interest and importance in this township, and is one of its enterprising and popular citizens. Formerly he voted the Republican ticket, but since 1884 he has been identified with the Prohibitionists. He has filled a number of township offices with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of all concerned. The first marriage of Mr. Brooks united him with Miss Evaline Redding, who was born in St. Joseph County, Ind., being the daughter of Rev. James Redding, a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. One child was born of the union, Minnie E., wife of James Herron. Mrs. Evaline Brooks died in June 1864. Mr. Brooks was afterward again married, choosing as his wife Mrs. Mary Lincoln, a native of Morgan County, Ohio. Her first husband, Charles Lincoln, enlisted in the service of the Union during the late war, becoming a member of the Fourth Michigan Infantry, and died while in active service on New Year's Day, 1863. Mrs. Lincoln is the daughter of Uriah and Phebe B. (Wilks) Harris, her father being a native of New York State, who came to Watervliet Township in 1850 and here died. Mr. Brooks and his accomplished wife are people of high standing in the Methodist Episcopal Church and throughout the entire community.
