    3. From: "Midge Garza" <[email protected]> Subject: WOOD, JONES, VAN DOLAH, BROOKS: SOME FAMILY'S BIBLE There is also part of a wedding invitation. The surname of the bride is VAN DOLAH and the groom BROOKS. If someone claims this Bible I want to be certain they are indeed the ones who should have it. Therefore, I will not give the birthdate of the pictured baby, or the names of the bride and groom. Bibles are such meaningful family items. It would make me very happy to be able to return this Bible to the family it belongs to. Thank you. Midge Garza

"The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded on the North American Continent in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 26, 1819 when Thomas Wildey and four members of the Order from England instituted Washington Lodge No. 1. This lodge received its charter from Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows in England. "dd Fellowship became the 1st national fraternity to include both men and women when it adopted the beautiful Rebekah Degree on September 20, 1851. This degree is based on the teachings found in the Holy Bible, and was written by the Honorable Schuyler Colfax who was Vice President of the United States during the period 1868-1873. Odd Fellows and Rebekahs were also the first fraternal organization to establish homes for our senior members and for orphaned children." >From http://norm28.hsc.usc.edu/IOOF.shtml If the order first arrived here in Baltimore in 1819, it seems like it would take a decade or more to reach New York state. I know that later-day lodges keep membership records, so you might get hold of the national leadership and inquire what records are available from 19th century New York. I used Google with a search string of "IOOF history" as a starting point. Chris

Please keep querying at intervals, as you're doing, and eventually I'm confident we'll be able to identify him. Now your previous query identified George as George Washington, and mentioned Ohio as the place he ended up. I couldn't find a George Washington born 1780 (most of these names occur after the namesake was inaugurated president in 1788), but when I searched for any George born 1780 I found the following. "Mr. Delbert Radke, Attorney at Law in San Francisco, CA wrote a letter to the Record and Pension Office of the War Department dated December 19th, 1928 in which he states that George Brooks was born on Aug. 29, 1780. He further states that George was baptised on Oct. 29th, 1780 at the Old Dutch Reform Church in Deerpark, NY. "He removed in 1797 to Pompey, NY. In 1810 he followed his son John, who had removed the previous year, to Florence, OH. ("John Brooks, Sr., and his wife and family came in 1810. He had been wounded in the Battle of White Plains, and Monmouth. His first wife, Rachel Blizzard, the mother of his children, was probably dead. From what little information we can obtain we believe he had a second wife at that time.") Virginia, There are differences between a "board," as in "bulletin board" -- which is what the Ancestry operation is -- and a mailing list, which this is. The Ancestry surname boards, like the bulletin board at your local supermarket, allow people to "tack up" (post) messages or notices in a fixed location. The only people who will see these are those who subsequently visit the board. Since many users leave a post and then fail to return to the board for weeks or months, there's no "real time" exchange possible. And those folks who have email but no internet access are left out of the picture, since they can't access the website hosting the board. In contrast, on an internet mailing list like this, each time you or any subscriber posts a message, it's delivered to the mailbox of anyone interested enough to have subscribed, as fast as the internet can manage the task -- seconds, minutes or hours in most cases. So we have "real-time" exchanges here, which is the point of creating this list. On a board, in contrast, your message can languish for weeks, and connections are few and far between. Online boards tend to be an entry point for internet newcomers. Because boards aren't very efficient, for the reasons given, as newcomers gain more experience they tend to migrate their efforts to mailing lists, like those at RootsWeb, of which this is one. I periodically visit the various Brooks boards hosted on commercial sites in search of recruits for this list, but most of these attempts bounce. Having offered up that primer, I would ask that you post the transcription to our list (we're not a "site," since we're not on the Web) so that the 192 other subscribers here can have a look. :-) I'm curious myself. The only person who tends to post things from other lists here is me, and I'm your friendly listowner. :-) Others have certainly done so in the past, to the great advantage of all of us. I will not cite contributors' names for fear of omitting someone, but do take a look at the list archive, where you'll find, for example, transcriptions of the Brooks listings in the Barbour Collection for a number of CT towns, quite possibly including your own line. Looking over the messages will give you a better feel for what and how we do here. http://archiver.rootsweb.com/BROOKS--NE-L/ The address is case-sensitive. Thanks for asking, Virginia, rather than assuming. Thoughtfulness is highly prized here. 3. In looking through my grandmother's old, turn-of-the-century scrapbooks today, I discovered a lengthy newspaper article about Capt. Garry Brooks, upon the occasion of his turning 100 years old. Capt. Brooks was born on July 5, 1806, in New Milford, CT, and was the son of Samuel Louis Brooks, from the Revolutionary War. He lived in Monroe County, NY from 1824 until the time of his death. This is a pretty long news article, and I'm wondering where the best place would be for me to submit the transcribed article. Obviously, I could do it at this site, but I have noticed things from other genealogy sites are also copied onto this list. Would it be better for me to type it first on, say, Ancestry.com's Brooks list - and then it could be copied here? The news article also gives some info on Samuel Louis Brooks and his experiences in the Revolutionary War. Note that the long URL will probably be broken into two lines when you receive this -- in which case you'll have to reassemble it in your browser. =============================== This information was provided on 16 Feb 2002 by John Hansen, List Admin for the WARREN List: There is a IGI search program for the UK. This has been introduced yesterday. I checked it out today and it works fine. It allows you to search the IGI by parish and returns ALL the IGI records for that surname in that Microfilm. It covers both birth and marriages. It obviously took a lot of work to develop and cross\index the IGI records by Parish in a database. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.ht m#Page Go to the Site, click on the Country of interest, which includes: Channel Islands England (including the Isle of Man) Scotland Ireland Wales The site is Copyright © 2002, Hugh Wallis.
