Can anyone :supply more information about Samuel and Hepxibah (White) Brooks? Here's the Boston marriage record: Samuel Brookes & Hephziba White | int. reads [Hepzibah] | Sept. 22, 1774 It's found in "A Volume of Records Relating to the Early History of Boston Containing Boston Marriages from 1752 to 1809." Boston, MA: Municipal Printing Office, 1903. Digitally reproduced on CD-ROM "Early Vital Records of Suffolk County, Massachusetts, To About 1850" (Wheat Ridge, CO: Search and ReSearch Publishing, 1998). The problem is there's no further identity for either person. I guess Samuel's identity as the man b. Medford, 1754 is reasonable since you show a dau Hepsibah of his first marriage. She would be named after his first wife. But the following Medford death record poses a potential problem: Brooks, ____, w. Sam[ue]l, Jan. 2, 1783. [consump[tio]n, a. 22, C.R.1.] It's found on p. 349 of the published VR. Again, Samuel is not further identified. If both Samuels are the same man, and the unidentified decedent of 1783 is Hepsibah, and her age at death is accurate or close, then she married at about 13 years of age. The problem is always, "Which Samuel?" or "Which William" when many men of the same name are living contemporaneously. Now factor in a third wild card, found in the Concord VR, p. 251: Samll White of westford & Hepzibah Barrett of Concord was married by the Revd mr Wm . Emerson May ye 23d. 1775 This Hepzibah (Barrett) White, b. 3 Oct 1750 at Concord, was also a Brooks, the daughter of Ens. John Barrett and Lois Brooks, in the Concord line of Capt. Thomas. I've totally confused myself with these various possibilities, Wylie, but there are some clues for you to play with. Chris

Since Northumberland (known by its village name of Groveton) is the next town northward up the Connecticut River from Lancaster, I've been inclined to consider these events somehow related despite the differing surnames. I'm sending them along because the dates and the names fit so well. Within the past couple of days I reposted a link for Hugh Wallis's IGI interface page, which allows you to search for a surname in a given locality in the British Isles and North America without a batch number. Unfortunately, a check just a moment ago indicates that the NH/US listings are spotty, and I don't see Lancaster or Northumberland there. Hugh did the UK first and has really just started coding the US batch numbers, I think, so you might want to bookmark the site and check back in a month. At that point in time there might have been 300 men living named William Brooks, each of them descending in one or the other of the various New England lines. It's lot easier when the name is unusual, like Barnabas or Marmaduke or something. Chris

    3. Hi, Several weeks ago I posted a link for a site allowing researchers to search the IGI's UK holdings by surname. Basically, the site provides the batch numbers which are the key to the process. Today's news is that Hugh Wallis, the siteowner, has begun posting U.S. batch numbers. <My first lot of North American numbers are up on the site - you can <get to them from the same page as before - <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.h tm <- there will be more to come if folks can tell me what ranges to <look in!! <Please pass the word around <All the very best <Hugh Wallis <Ontario, Canada <Formerly of Surrey, UK>> That link above spans two lines in my email software, so you'll probably have to reassemble it in your browser. In the list's early months, we made lots of matches -- but those tended to be the "easy" ones to identify. Many of the folks now (still) subscribed have much less to work with -- "He would have been born around 1800 somewhere in New York" -- and so our matchmaking rate has fallen alarmingly. But one "hit" more than makes up for many prior misses. For following on beyond Jacobus's scope of coverage, I'd look for Barbour records (for as long as the family remained in Connecticut). Unfortunately, there's no statewide analogue to Barbour for New York, and it's a much bigger and more populous state as well. Keep plugging! :-) Other subscribers should follow Marianne's example and re-post their brick walls every couple of months -- I try to enter new data on a daily basis myself, and there are always new subscribers as folks unsub and new ones take their place. 1. [BNE] George Brooks b. 1780-made a match!
    2. Chris, I believe that the George Brooks you found is my George Brooks. The pieces are beginning to fall together! You gave me.... ...but when I searched for any George born 1780 I found the following. "Mr. Delbert Radke, Attorney at Law in San Francisco, CA wrote a letter to the Record and Pension Office of the War Department dated December 19th, 1928 in which he states that George Brooks was born on Aug. 29, 1780.... If I am correct, this Delbert Radke, is descended from George W. Brooks --Julius Caesar Brooks' brother. They both are sons of the George Brooks born in 1780. Their mother was Mary Clark. Also given: The line as he has it is George, 1780 - 1850 Major John (1755 - 1846) + Rachel BLIZZARD Jonathan (say 1722) + Sarah HUBBARD Benjamin (1685) of Stratford, CT + Mary BOOTH John (say 1640) of Stratford + Sarah OSBORN, widow John PEAT Jr. A kind soul gave me the information from the "Families of Old Fairfield", but it stopped at Benjamin Brooks, now I'm searching for anything on Jonathan Brooks and Sarah Hubbard. He is now my missing link. Any help is appreciated. I thought you'd like the good news that your effort to help was a success! Mariannne
