Good Morning - I have the article from Early American Industries Association (The Chronicle). Anyone descended of Bezaleel MUST have it. There is even a photo of his five sons, Thomas McDonough Brooks Jonathan Edwards Brooks Norman Crane Brooks Milton Brooks Luther Martin Brooks It includes a debtor's list, history, pages from their journals, etc. A small sample: "Following his first marriage in 1810 to Philly Cooke, Bezaleel Brooks purchased his home and blacksmith shop on River Road in New Haven Mills (New Haven), Vermont. His wife died in 1817, leaving him with a son, Thomas McDonough, and two daughters Elizabeth and Casendana. He was remarried in 1818 to Polly Crane. By 1822 he decided to move his shop and home to Middlebury, Vermont, and sold his property to his brother, Samuel." The article is 10 pages. Please let me know if you need a copy at [email protected] Carol Pullen-Reynolds

There is an extensive, well-illustrated article on the Brooks Edge Tool Company which one of our readers shared with me a couple of years back. It runs for 12 or 15 pages and was published in something akin to the Journal of American Industry or Journal of American Archaeology -- one of the professional associations' publications. Well-researched, comprehensive, covered the entire life of the company, the individuals and the metallurgical techniques involved. Last fall the author contacted me for help with Bezaleel's ancestry, which I gather is also his own. I spent two months trying to recruit him, but he was unwilling to subscribe here. He never provided a reason why -- he simply ignored my repeated suggestions that he ask his questions on the list, so that everyone could benefit. The article's buried here somewhere, or I'd haul it out to provide more precise details (though its author shall remain nameless). But I've read it a number of times and don't recall the BORDEN name appearing in it. :-) This foundry made first-class hardened steel edge tools and was in business for at least two full generations. Actually, I've had a long-time interest in the Borden case, and the axe involved is always described as a "rusty old hatchet" whose handle had broken off at some undeterminable time before or during the commission of the murders. It couldn't have been a quality Brooks Edge Tool -- or she wouldn't have needed the legendary "forty whacks." :-) Chris
Very Interesting! Thanks Cindy and Chris. Wonder if they sold any of their axes to Lizzie B of Fall River. Along a similar morbid line of thought, I know the person who rented the wood chipper to the "Wood chipper Murderer" (fairly recent CT case). Anyone recognize an H. Brooks who belonged to a CT National Guard detachment serving in Buffalo in 1901? He's listed as one of the soldiers who captured Leon Czolgosz after his Sept. 6th assassination of the President. His photograph, and other Brooks photographs, can be seen at http://cho.uconn.edu/ which is the Connecticut History Online browse page. Simply enter BROOKS in a keyword search of this image library. Find something you want, and the information is there to order a copy from the museum or institution which holds the image. 14,000 CT (maps, photos and drawings) images are catalogued here. Chris
In the 1810 VT index these Brooks are listed for Franklin County: Asa, Eli, Elizer, and Harrington I looked up the actual census page 277 and found that the names were very difficult to read and that two of the names were abbr. which lead to the incorrect reading of Asa and Eli. Page 277 St. Albans, Franklin Co., VT - Eleazer Brooks 2M 0-9 1M 10-15 1M 26-44 2F 0-9 1F 26-44 An. (must be Adonijah Jr.) Brooks 2M 0-9 1M 16-25 1M 26-44 1F 0-9 1F 26-44 Az. I can't find him in the VT index nor the census. Can you check on this? Cindy Schroeder

Mike Shaw ([email protected]) wrote: :thanks for that info : :do not forget Edna Brooks still living in Ca Doris was posting a list of the BROOKS events she found on LDS film #1597643, item #3. The 19th century dates of the sources recorded in this film are way too early for Edna, if she is still living, unless she is verrrrry, verrrrry old. :-) You can see from the film number that Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ("Mormon") volunteers have shot hundreds of thousands of rolls of film since they began filming in the 1940s. (There are 1,780 rolls of film in the Family History Library catalog just for Middlesex County, MA deeds.) Perhaps Edna makes her LDS screen debut on another, more recent roll. If *you* don't forget her, Mike -- assuming she's your relation -- then that's the important thing. :-) Chris
