Attentive readers, or Woburnophiles, will recognize the surnames in the subject line as those of the first two husbands of Hannah/2 Brooks, daughter of Henry of Woburn, about whom I just posted moments ago. The Tributaries web site now includes sketches of Hannah's immediate children, six by Thomas Fox, three by Andrew Lester, and their spouses. That's an addition of a generation in Hannah's line. While she had no children by her 3d husband Isaac Willey, I added to the upload a sketch of Isaac, and data for his immediate children, for reasons of context. The newly uploaded information, however, is just the tip of the iceberg. Descendant Foxes and Lesters intermarried, until the absurd point is reached where, in the 5th or 6th generation, a Fox male marries his grand-niece, a Lester. (Really.) I created or modified 1,151 individuals in the course of this study. Accordingly, I have made up some files, as follows, which I will be happy to share. -- Descendants of ANDREW LESTER, 297 individuals -- Descendants of THOMAS FOX, about 640 individuals The "package", in each case, consists of: -- An annotated descendant report for the emigrant progenitor -- A simple, one-line-per-person descendant chart, which is handy as a finding aid when wading through lengthy register-style reports If you would like a copy of these files, please email me privately with an ALL-CAPS subject line of SEND FOX or SEND LESTER, or, if both are of interest, SEND FOX AND LESTER. I'll only hold the files for a week or so before deleting them, so don't be a sluggard! :-) Chris |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Christopher Brooks BROOKS Families of New England http://www.tributaries.org ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Good morning, I have made several modest additions to the genealogy pages at the Tributaries web site. Routinely, most changes included in my periodic uploads are small, consisting of a correction here, an added or upgraded source for a previously reported fact there. The major addition included in this upload is a substantial revision and augmentation of Hannah/2 Brooks, daughter of Henry/1 of Woburn, and her three husbands, Thomas FOX, Andrew LESTER, and Isaac WILLEY. Hannah's sketch is the product of an inquiry which has stretched out over the past 3-4 years, and adds the three sons she had by Andrew Lester. The upload also includes incremental revisions for Hannah's brother Capt. Timothy/2 Brooks, of Massachusetts and West Jersey. This completes the immediate family of Henry/1 Brooks (as I have it) on the site. If you have individuals of interest within the early generations posted to date, it's easy to keep track of changes using the "Notify Me When This Page Changes" link. Judy Brooks Truchon found an Ancestry posting that included the unsourced parentage of Henry Brooks by a James C. Sutton. She tried emailing him and I tried again after doing a Google search of his name and an appearance on Rootsweb, but it is seemingly an out of date address. However, continuing through the 108 listings for James C. Sutton, I found this one again with another opportunity to get further information. We will see what happens with that. Cheshire Jean
I am interested in your listing of the parentage of Henry Brooks who married Hannah Potter Blakeslee. As there is no source, I would like to know where you obtained the information. I am a direct descendant of Henry and live on the farm started by his grandson Enos in Cheshire, CT. The property has been in the family since 1733, and Henry and his son Thomas moved to what became Cheshire in 1705 as recorded in official documents. Our line is Henry, Thomas, Enos, David, David, Elizabeth Brooks Chatfield, Elizabeth Brooks Chatfield Thayer, Elizabeth Brooks Thayer McKee, my mother. Thanks for any information you might have. I am such an amateur at genealogy, that I always hesitate to write. According to a researcher who left his work at the Chenango Historical Society, and whose name I cannot tell you because I cannot put my hands on those papers, Thomas Brooks' tombstone at Stewarts Corner Burying Ground, reads: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord In Memory of Thomas Brooks Who died August 30th 1822 Age 62 years and 11 days Husband to Lucy & father to John, Clarisa, Elijah, Thomas, Roswell, Electra, Socrates, Theseus, Clitus, and Caius (Cassius) C., the best of fathers how shall we discharge the gratitude and duty we owe to him. For die to live is Christ & to die is gain If the children who erected this stone were correct, his birthday was August 19, 1760. I realize this is not a firm date by anyone's standards, either. I, myself, visited the Stewarts Corners Burying Ground, Chenango in July of 2001. It was so overgrown with weeds, trees and vines that it was impenetrable. My husband and I forced our way in, found one toppled tombstone, not of the Brooks. We were spooked and left, so I did not find Thomas' stone. Sad that the grave of a Revolutionary War soldier would be so neglected! Anne Hart

I think the Deerfield sighting is useful in that it confirms a migration path for Thomas and his brother Levi northward up the Connecticut River valley. Logically we might predict some intervening time spent in an unknown Vermont location before the final move west into New York state. I haven't yet spotted any of the other siblings outside CT. Chris
Found in Sheldon's Hist. Deerfield, Vol. 2, p. 90: BROOKS, Thomas, was here 1788, with wife Lucy and ch. Thomas, John, Elijah, Suretis, Thetis and Clarissa, but they soon disappear. Sheldon, George. A History of Deerfield, Massachusetts: The Times When and the People by Whom It Was Settled, Unsettled and Resettled: With a Special Study of the Indian Wars in the Connecticut Valley. Deerfield, MA: 1896. 2 vols. These are the Thomas/Lucy who later settled down in South Plymouth, Chenango, NY, and added children Clitus, Roswell, Electra and Cassius C. I am endlessly entertained by their children's names. :-) Sheldon's "Suretis" and "Thetis" are apparently misreadings of the handwritten names Socrates and Theseus. Can anyone pinpoint Thomas the father's birth with a FIRM source? I haven't found any record in Barbour. Perhaps one of you has seen a baptismal record, or an age given in a will, or something else tangible? I'm copying this privately to half a dozen descendants in this line if you can help, please respond publicly to the list. Dale Miller wrote: > With such an unusual name it would seem someone like > Eurania Brooks would be easy to track but I am having a > difficult time with her. Probably due to the given variations in her name. Lurena/Lorena was a not infrequent Brooks name of the period, but I've never seen Eurania or Urania or Urana in my Brooks research. I looked at all children of couples named Benjamin/Mary, at all Brookses connected in one way or another with Maine, etc. The only "hit" I had was in connection with looking for Brooks events in Somerset County, ME, where a Benjamin H. Brooks was born about 1834 (calculated from his 1872 marriage record at Claremont, NH) to Thomas J. Brooks & Mary Farmer. Maine is often a tough research nut to crack due to the lack of statewide records before the late 1800s. Perhaps one of our Maine researchers will recognize something in your query, and I'd also suggest a keyword search of the message archive. Finally, if you don't find any help here, bear in mind that a couple of new subscribers join us each month. Since one of these might hold the answer to your questions, it makes good sense to re-query in a couple/few months. Was Joseph a millwright? Lewiston was (is still?) a mill town, and so were Saco and Providence. His peregrinations suggest that perhaps his occupation determined where he lived. Miller, Dale <dmiller@ocgov.net> With such an unusual name it would seem someone like Eurania Brooks would be easy to track but I am having a difficult time with her. Eurania BROOKS, daughter of Benjamin BROOKS and Mary UNKOWN was born abt 1837 in Maine, according to the US Census 1850, US Census, Maine, Somerset, Norridgewock, page 160. She died sometime before her husband, Joseph BROOKS, who died in 1899. The were married on 23 Feb 1855 in Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine, according to the IGI. They had at least one daughter, Clara Ella BROOKS, born on 10 Oct 1859 Saco, Maine - died on 27 Jul 1901 in Providence, RI. She married James Fisher Moore. I am loooking for information on her and her parents. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Miller, Dale <dmiller@ocgov.net> Joseph was born 29 Mar 1831 in Holcombe, Lancashire, England, to George and Alice BROOKS. He died 12 Sep 1899 in Providence, RI. Joseph married Eurania BROOKS on 23 Feb 1855 in Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. She was born abt 1838 in Maine and died before her husband. Her name appears as Eurania, or Urana, or Lurena at different times. Her parents were Benjamin and Mary BROOKS. They can be found in various places but settled in Providence, RI and appear there in the city directory in 1890, 1891 and 1892. They had at least one daughter, Clara Ella BROOKS, born on 10 Oct 1859 Saco, Maine - died on 27 Jul 1901 in Providence, RI. She married James Fisher Moore. I am hoping someone might have additional information on either Joseph or Eurania and their parents. I have gathered most of their information from the US Census (1850-1880), as well as the Providence RI Division of Archives and History, and the IGI. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

In doing some Thayer research (three were hung in Buffalo in 1825) came across this: "NY-Genesee Spirit of the Times August 23, 1884 Batavia, Genesee, New York August 23, 1885 REMARKABLE LONGEVITY. The following list of old citizens is, I think, in every case correct, as I had nearly all the dates from them personally:--" A long list follows including: "Sylvester BROOKS, Oakfield, 1802" As each one has a place and date, I assume that is their birth place and date. The posting can be found by going to www.newspaperabstracts.com, clicking on United States, next screen click on NY, next screen click on Erie which is the County, then search a name. You can put in a search name earlier if you want to find Brooks in any part of NY. Cheshire Jean

Since there's been a continuing interest in Roswells, here's a roster of the Roswells I've collected. I make three assumptions about these men. (1) Some of these sightings are duplications of the same man. (2) At least some and perhaps most of these men are closely related. The only two I've been able to ancestrally identify are in the Glastonbury line. (3) Each Roswell with the middle initial R. or middle name Russell descends from Noah Brooks and Maracha Russell. I haven't been able to figure out how they fit. Maybe typing them out will help me do that. Any additions, clarifications, corrections would be appreciated. Perhaps some of you with a better grasp of CT town geography will see a pattern here. If you can add anything, please send it to the list. Ramona Curtis wrote: > Recently you said no HTML. I'm not that computer > literate. Does that mean I can't send a file with a > table in it? If you send a table to the list, the only formatting guaranteed to make it through the RootsWeb spam filters is that done with the TAB key. Which doesn't always translate well, depending upon the viewer's email program and their choice of display fonts. A non-proportional font, like Courier, means that a lower-case "eye" (letter "i") will be the same width as a lower-case em (letter "m") — every numeral or letter will be the same width — and so the table will align properly when viewed in Courier. But if someone views your table in Times Roman, a proportional font where the eye is half or less the width of the em, etc., then your table columns won't align. There's also the problem of word wrap in email, which is a pretty primitive message format. If you have a table created in MS Word or Excel, you can offer it to the list, then have people who want it write you privately for a copy, which you send them as an email attachment. The list server doesn't accept either attachments OR html. Thanks for asking first. :-) Chris Christopher Brooks, List Administrator: ============================================ BROOKS-NE-L (Brooks Families of New England) at RootsWeb.com ============================================

To researchers with particular interest in Brooks in early Albany County, and/or Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene Counties - Have recently completed a look into the witnesses and sponsors for the children of Jonathan & Josua Brooks to see if any family connections could be drawn. Some interesting and unexpected facts (and/or possibilities) came forward. Originally I was just planning on sending this as a post to the whole list, but as it has grown to a 5 page Word document I thought it might be better if I just offered it and send it to anyone who requests it. Please respond to me personally for a copy. Sincerely, Valentine Van Zee
