After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb." So our message archive, which was my primary concern, will remain online and searchable with nothing further to do. This was the part I didn't know how to recreate, so we are saved by the bell. Almost all replies re continuing have been positive. I've downloaded the existing subscriber list and soon (tonight? tomorrow?) will try to do a mass subscription of all your addresses within the new Groups.io group. 3. The information is invaluable to me. I recommend you keep a web site with the data, i.e. www.tributaries.info. Then use a separate site for messaging-- one of the standard prepackaged automated services that are available for such purposes. I have managed mailing lists before and know how much work it can be. This approach should make it easier for you to manage. I do want to thank you for all the work you have put into running the Brooks list. Jim Turner www. 2. Chris, I'm interested in both the BNE mailing list and your Tributaries website. They are great resources for our family. I also find that Tributaries is a great way to get family members interested in Brooks genealogy. I will be willing to contribute what I can to help both continue to thrive. Let me know. Buzz -----Original Message----- From: Christopher Brooks <trib@tributaries.info> Sent: Saturday, January 11, 2020 2:03 AM To: BNE-L <brooks-ne@rootsweb.com> Subject: [BNE] Future of the BROOKS/NE mailing list Happy New Year, all! The BNE mailing list in its present form will cease to exist in March. That's the word this week from Ancestry.com (which acquired rootsweb.com years ago). Subscribers will no longer be able to message fellow subscribers with research questions via the list. This in itself wouldn't affect many of us — the list might have received only half a dozen queries over the past year. That is because times and methods have changed. But as newcomers now post trees to Ancestry.com in the cloud instead of entering and storing them in dedicated software on their own computer, they avoid exposure to the correspondence and experience of the hundreds of thousands of us who were doing this before the seductive promise of knowing your identity "with just a few mouse clicks" came along. Ancestry is also abandoning its commitment to host Rootsweb message archives. There's a ton of information in our archive which is unique and/or unavailable anywhere else, and I've always considered our archive (which is public) an important resource. ================================== Pay attention now, please. ================================== I need to ascertain from you subscribers how much interest there is among you in moving to another site to (a) continue the list capability to send/receive messages, AND/OR (b), continue storage of and public access to our message archive. I have looked at Groups.io, a message list community, and created the bare-bones skeleton of a BROOKS-NE message archive there as a possible replacement site. There are many questions as to whether a transfer will work and as to cost. BUT THE FIRST QUESTION which must be answered is how much continuing interest is there among you. I need to hear from a lot more than the usual half-dozen still paying attention. P.S. In your reply, please don't all quote this entire message, but just the relevant sentence or two. Thanks, Chris ||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Christopher Brooks BROOKS Families of New England https://www.tributaries.info _______________________________________________ The BNE message archive is at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/BROOKS-NE. _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/brooks-ne@rootsweb.com Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community

    3. Hi Chris,  Just so you know, I am still interested in the Brooks research although I have never been able to connect to my original ancestor.   Since it could happen as soon as tomorrow, or next week, I definitely want to see it continue somewhere and somehow!!   Thanks so much for all you've done in the past!   Carole Brooks Lett
