Author: historygal07 Surnames: Brogan Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brogan/685/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm an American adoptee (birth name Barbara Brogan) searching for my birth mother. I know she was born in 1943 and was the oldest child in her family. She would have migrated to the NYC area about 1960 and lived w/ friends and likely worked for the phone company. Research has led me to believe her name is Mary T. Brogan (June 1943, birth registered at Castlebar). If this is her, her mother's maiden name was Timlin (Ann, I think). I was born in the Bronx in 1964 and was adopted through the Spence-Chapin agency in Manhattan. I have some reason to believe that she migrated back to Ireland sometime after my birth. My birth father was a bit older, and also an Irish immigrant from the West of Ireland who came to the States sometime in the late 1950s. They were unmarried. Any info anyone can offer about her--or my other relatives would be welcome. Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I remember Linda and Bobby from our last visit, before we moved to California in 1969. I think Linda was very close to my age - I was born in 1957. I used to send Uncle Eddie Christmas cards and such, and after a while did not get replies. I recall my mother saying he was, or at least ran for, a state representative position. Well here is the surprise. I am in Boston today. My husband is here for a meeting and we made this a very quick trip. We are staying at the Westin Copley Place. I did not think there was any free time in our schedule. However, we leave Sunday late afternoon, and Sunday morning, tomorrow, became free. I know this is riducouly short notice! We could make a quick visit to Cambridge tomorrow morning if your were available. I got your original post a few days after our daughter's wedding, and then we left town for a trip. All April and May I seemed to be playing catch up. Here is my cell number, or email me back. 209 765 2397 It would be great if this worked out. If not, I can fill you in about what I know about other cousins, Marie's sons. Marie, Buddy and her family were in Las Vegas since the 70's so we saw them regularly. Buddy retired from the Air Force. So glad you replied. And again, sorry for my late response. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: tedryan64 Surnames: Brogan, Glenn Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brogan/681.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jay, My name is Mary Brogan Ryan. John J. (Ike) Brogan was my great-grandfather, and this is quite a bit of interesting family history. You may know some of it already. How are you related to John J. and Alice? Michael Brogan & Catherine McFowen were born in Ireland, but I only have names for them - no dates. Their son was John Brogan, born in Donegal, Ireland. B: Apr. 1840, D: 14 Oct. 1921 in Philadelphia. He was married to Mary Harrington. B: Dec. 1839 in Ireland. D: 25 Mar 1906 in Philadelphia. Their children (and this is wear it gets confusing) were: Daniel Brogan. B: Jan 1862 in PA. D: 1 Sep1910 Philadelphia Margaret E Brogan. B: Dec. 1864 in Philadelphia, D: 4 Jun 1937. Phila. Ellen Brogan (Sister Victor SSJ.) 1866 Phila. - 4 Oct. 1965 Phila. Next the twins: John Brogan. 17 Jul 1868 - 8 Mar 1869 Phila. Thomas Cyril Brogan. 17 Jul 1868 - 1934 Phila. Then: Kathryn Brogan 1871 - 12 Dec 1914 * Michael Brogan Oct 1872 - 9 Dec 1923 Phila. Michael (who actually went by the nickname Ike) changed his name to John Joseph Brogan. I can't tell you exactly why he did that, only that he did, perhaps to match his father's name? This is the man who married Alice Frances Glenn. Then 2 more kids: Mary Brogan (Mother Marie Gertrude SSJ) 1875 - ? Phila. Elizabeth (Lizzie Brogan) 1878 Phila. - 11Sep 1941 Baltimore. I am not sure if you are aware of the tragedy the struck this family. Ike and Alice had 6 children: John Joseph 1900-1959 Joseph Thomas Brogan 1901-1965 (my grandfather) Mary Frances Brogan 1904-1913 Victor Brogan 1906-1913 Thomas Brogan 1909-1913 Gertrude M. Brogan 1911-1994 Apparently, the family had just moved into their new home. The oldest son, John, was in the hospital with pneumonia. Ike was at a Knights of Columbus meeting. Alice had a history of mental illness, and apparently something snapped. She began murdering the children by cutting their throats with a kitchen knife. She killed Mary, Victor, and Thomas. My grandfather, Joe, was about 12 at the time. He grabbed the baby, Gertrude, and ran into one of the bedrooms and locked the door, saving their lives. There are articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer in the 4 August 1913, and 5 August 1913 editions. Many of the Brogan men were in the ornamental stone cutting business, and at least one was a mortician. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My mother was born in April of 1960 and was put up for adoption right after. The adoption was closed, hence not having a lot of information. She was born: Victoria Ann Brogan, but was called Vikki by the ladies of the adoption agency, which is now closed. Her name was changed in 1965 or '66, after she was adopted. As you can tell, I am at a dead end. I'm not finding a whole lot of Brogans in Michigan to begin with and I just don't know where to go...I have had someone email me with a couple websites and links, but it really didn't pan out. ANY INFORMATION would be greatly appreciated!! If anyone's heard about a baby that was put up for adoption...rumors, stories, ANYTHING!! Maybe they will match something that I've heard...as there have been stories behind the adoption...but just stories. My mother passed away in October 2012. She will always be remembered as "The Queen Bee." She literally was the first. But all my life there has alw! ays been mystery behind where we (mom, sister, me and brother) come from. After I joined the Army in 1999 and went through all of the rigamaroar of family medical history there is still even more mystery...any help...from...anybody... 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: kadibrogan Surnames: Brogan, O'Donnell, Kolb, Mulholland, Haney, Kemble Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brogan/682/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I've hit quite a brick wall in the Brogan line and was wondering if anyone could help. I just started researching. The earliest ancestor I have is Edward Brogan, born about April 1838 in Donegal, Ireland. He left on the ship "American Union" out of Liverpool and arrived in New York on March 30, 1857. He married Bridget O'Donnell (born about May 1838 in Donegal) in 1858 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Carbon County, PA. I have seen reports of them living in Eckley, PA, Carbon County, PA, and both allegedly died in Freeland, PA. The pair supposedly had eight children: Anna (b. 1860), Mary Theresa (b. 1861), Patrick Aloysius (b. 1863), William Francis (b. 1866), Bridget (b. 1867), Sarah (b. 1870), James (b. 1876), and Edward Francis (b. 1878). Edward Francis Brogan was born about October 10, 1878 in Buck Mountain, Carbon County, PA. He married Elizabeth Veronica Kolb (born October 1881 in Newark, NJ. I believe her parents were Charles and Catharyn, and of German descent). They eventually ended up in Burlington, NJ where Edward died in 1958 and Elizabeth in 1967. Edward and Elizabeth had three children: Edward Francis (b. 1905), Charles J (b. 1907), and Kathryn Frances (b. 1919). Charles J Brogan was born in 1907 in Burlington, NJ. He married Rose C Mulholland (born about 1916 in Bristol PA to John Mulholland, who is affiliated with a Bristol baseball team, and Sarah Haney) in 1934 in Doylestown, PA. Together they had four children: Charles J Brogan II (b. 1934 d. 2004), Robert W Brogan (b. 1944 d. 1986), John Edward Brogan (b. 1936 d. 2012) and Kathryn. John Edward Brogan is my paternal grandfather, and was married to Shirley Kemble. If anyone has any information on Edward and Bridget's parents or any other members, I would greatly appreciate it. I am really stuck! Thank you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
