VA Historical Magazine: Career of Col Charles Broadwater. by Robert Lee Haycock, Washington, D.C. p 234) Old manor house, "Springfield" is colonial homestead of the Broadwater family, not far from the town of Vienna, VA on the road to Fairfax Courthouse. Family graves are nearby. DAR marked graves are Charles d 1806, Lt. Charles L in Rev War, Lt. Guy in War of 1812. p 238) VA State Papers, Vol 1 p 141) 14 Aug 1710, Inspection of Ship Jamaica Merchant, lying at anchor in upper James River Dist. Signed by 7 inspectors: Charles Broadwater & 6 others. Henning's "Statutes at Large" Vol 4 pg 268) Establishing Warehouses, May 1838, at Quantico upon Robert Brent's land, at Great Hunting Creek on Broadwater's land in Prince William Co, VA was under 1 inspection. Capt Charles Broadwater, the shipmster, received a grant of land in that part of Prince william Co which later became Fairfax Co, VA; & in old age settled into his manor house near Fairfax Courthouse. He m Miss Simes/Semmes of Maryland. Charles Broadwater's son Col Charles Broadwater m wid/o Dr Pearison, maiden name was Ann Amelia Markham who desc'd from an old English family. Charles & Ann Broadwater had 3 ch: Daus: Jane m John Hunter, emigrant from Ayreshire, SCT owned land where Vienna , VA is today & had plantation called Ayre Hill. Sallie m Col John West of a historical family of Fairfax. Son Charles Lewis Broadwater was an officer of VA troops in the Rev War. Ann Hunter, d/o Jane (Broadwater) & John Hunter, m Pressley Gunnell of a historic Fairfax family. Their dau m John Haycock, who grson was Wm Harrison Haycock, father of the author of this work. p 257) Father Charles Broadwater came to VA bef 1710 from Surry, England where his home said to be near the village of Godalmering. The British emigrant was a shipmaster who sailed the Potaomac & James rivers in trade with England. He frequented the port of Belle Haven, later Alexandria, VA. His son Charles was a contemporary of George Washington & is assumed of similar age. His b date is unknown & assume abt 1730, d 1806. He fought with Washington in the French & Indian War. (note: Kegley's VA Frontier: 1758 in French & Indian War, MSS #1557). Mr Dalton was head of 31 volunteers & 54 militia from Fairfax. Land Records of Long Standing, p 107: John West vs Elizabeth Yerby -- In Ejectment. Deposition of Abraham Lay, age 71, that about Jun 1715 he came to this county as a cabin boy in the ship "Robert & John", Charles Broadwater, Commander. Ship to get a load of tobacco from Messrs Rozer & Adison. Sometime in Dec following Merrs John West, present plaintiff's father, d between which time & latter end of May 1716 Capt Charles Broadwater intermarried with Major West's widow, the plaintiff's mother. In July Capt Broadwater left with his ship for London & his deponent with him. He returned May 1717 with Capt Broadwater in the same ship & a William Mudge, Commander & he as apprentice to Caulkers business. He resided with Capt Broadwater until his death between 1730-35. Question lies about property line between land of Mr Woodbridge, now Mrs Yerby's, ;& that he believes that about 10-15 feet has washed away & 14-15 years ago he used the landing as a fishing place. Land Records of Long Standing. p25. Benjamin Sebastian vs Thomas Moxley: 23 Jun 31st year of reign of his royal majesty. Benjamin claims judgement against Thomas Moxley for break & enter, cut 100 oak trees of value of 20 pounds & left soil dug up. He asks damages of total of 50 pounds. Moxley claims survey in error & bounds of land in question. George West, Co Surveyor, under direction of Fiarfax Co, Va Jun 1758 court, did check land in question. Plaintiff produced copy of Proprietors Deed to John Harle for 464 acres dated 8 Mar 1728; & deed release from John Harle to William Harley of 26 Jun 1737 for 200 acres Moxley also claims. Plaintiff also produced copy of William Harle's Will when he devises land sold by Excrs: Charles Broadwater & Benjamin Sebastian to Lee Massey 9 Sep 1755 for 200 acres. Plaintiff also produced deeds released from Lee Massey for the 200 acres dated 15 Sep 1755. West survey as follows: begin at Maple stump & Locust stake on S side of Pimmits Run, shew'd at this survey by Gerrard Trammel for the place where stood the ancient corner Maple the beginning of the ancient patent. Survey description continues of area adjoining Pimmits Run. Chairn Carriers: Benjamin Williams, John Miek. George West, Surveyor. Charles Broadwater, Gent Sheriff of said Fairfax Co, VA had executed writ & Joseph Moxley became security for appearance of said Thomas Moxley.
