    1. Re: [BROADWATER-L] Charles L. Broadwater
    2. Judy, I have been busy moving & getting settled in a new home, but saved email to answer & yours was one on Charles Broadwater. I am a descendant of Broadwater Matney & as yet have not determined which Broadwater his given name came from. His parents were believed to be William (Broadwater ?) Matney & Jane Brooks, but I haven't been able to prove that yet either. What I have been doing is collecting data on the Broadwater surname, that thank goodness is uncommon & not that many to check early on . I found 2 emigrant families. >From Virginia Historical Magazine pg 234-238 (can't find my notes that give what issue). I found these magazines in a Library. You could do a search for the one with Broadwater in it. "Career of Col. Charles Broadwater, Fairfax Co, VA" by Robert Lee Haycock, Washington D.C. Page 237 "Of an old English family, the father of Charles Broadwater came to Virginia before 1710 from Surry where it is said the home was near the village of Godalmering. The British emigrant was a shipmaster who sailed the Potomac & the James River in trade with England. Frequently he dropped anchor at Belle Haven, the small port which later became Alexandria." Page 238 "Colonel Charles Broadwater, his son, married the widow of Dr. Peairson, whose maiden name was Ann Amelia Markham who descended from an old English family. Charles & Ann had 3 daughters. One of them, Jane, married John Hunter an emigrant from Ayreshire, Scotland, who owned most of the land where the town of Vienna stands today, & called his plantation 'Ayre Hill'. Another daughter, Sallie, married Col. John West, of a prominent family in the history of Fairfax. Charles Lewis Broadwater, a son, was an officer in command of Virginia troops in the Rev. War." Mr Haycock, author of this article, is a descendant thru Jane m John Hunter, whose dau Ann Hunter m Pressley Gunnell & their dau Janet Gunnell m John Haycock. It goes on to tell that lineage. Hope this is of some help. I'd love to exchange more data on this family. I feel quite sure it is tied to my gggrfa's name as James Mattingly who later went by Matney was at Fairfax Co, VA at the same time (1750s) & in court records along with Broadwater, West, Dalton & others that are related later with my lineage.
