    1. [BROADWATER-L] Charles Broadwater
    2. Norma Lewis
    3. Hi Robert - Welcome to the list - Your Broadwaters are very close to our Matneys. Have you run across that name in that area connected to your Broadwater? The Matneys also married Kilgores and Nickels.(Mattingly-Mattenley-Matonly) Charles Broadwater and son Charles, are found in Fairfax County VA in 1782 tax records (VA Heads of Families)- Charles with 6 white souls and 25 Blacks, and Charles with 2 white souls and 14 Blacks - In the 1790 census for Fairfax County the only Charles Broadwater has 3 white souls, 1 dwelling, 2 other buildings (slave cabin and Barn?). So, it seems the elder Charles Broadwater left Fairfax County between 1782 and 1790. Have you found Charles Broadwater in the Scott or Russell County 1790 census? He isn't in Pittsylvania County in 1790. There was a Charles Broadwater, ship Captain or ? in the Revolutionary War- These Broadwaters seem to be newly arrived from England. Right, Carolyn? But, there is Hugh Broadwater in Maryland, a servant, before 1664. There are many Broadwaters in St. Mary County MD- 3 cemeteries. You can find them on the St. Mary County USGenWeb site. I think this elder Charles Broadwater in Fairfax County may have gone to Scott or Russell - with this many children he would be the right age to have fought in the Rev. War. However, does it seem likely that a ship Captain would quit after the war and become a farmer? Maybe if he lost his ship. This needs sorting out. I'll see what I can find. The Matneys are looking for the connection between Broadwaters Matney and the Broadwaters. He was also in this area of VA - Washington Co. As for our listowner, Dan Matney, he does make some silly posts sometimes, but he is trying to be helpful and there are many listowners who never make themselves known to list members. I got off many lists because I was so tired of deleting so much garbage and I found out I could go into the Rootsweb Archives and search for lists and topics I'm interested in when I have time. If a list is not "closed", which many more are thanks to our latest spams - you can post to that list if you are not a member. I'll let you know what I find. Please post any ideas you have to the list for information of others. 3. Dan, I'm new to this mailing list, and I am not one to complain, but if I may make a small suggestion: I imagine that there are many people who are in my similar situation, i.e. very busy and with not enough time to do everything we'd like to do. I have hundreds of e-mail messages from various mailing lists sitting on my hard drive that I have yet to read. When I see a message like: >Suggested reading ! >http://www.rosecity.net/ >Dan Matney .... 99 times out of a hundred my finger will go automatically to the DEL key. I realize that your subject line tipped us off that there is some Cherokee information to be found at the web site, but that's all. Now you may take this suggestion and can it without so much as a second thought, but I think if I were going to recommend to others a web site to visit, that I'd at least try to give them some idea of what they may expect to find there. Since this is my first post to the Broadwater list -- let me just say that I am a descendant of John Broadwater (1788-1859) & Winnie Kilgore (1796-1873), both of Russell/Scott Co. VA (They lived in a log house near Copper Creek, not far from Nickelsville). John, born in Botetourt (now Roanoke) Co., VA, was the son of Charles Broadwater and Nancy ___?___. Looking for Charles' parents and Nancy's name/family. (John's birthplace only about 5 or 6 miles from my home.) Robert Beverly (hoping not to offend)

    3. Looking for information on Charles Broadwater b abvt 1790 SC Charles Broadwater had a duaghter Harruiett born in Ala in 1822. We did not find him in 1830 Al census however there is a Anna Brodwater page 054 Limestone Co. Also in Linestone Co is William J Driver and Hardy George. In 1840 Charles appears in Fayette Co Tn page 145 Also in Fayette Co are W.J. Driver and Hardin George. In 1850 Charles is in Independence Co Arkansas as is William Driver. Hardin George is in Yell Co Arkansas. ( I feel george and Driver are connected somehow) I think Charles had some connection with the removal of Choctaw's He received 160 acres of land as assignee of Oka La He Mah in 1857. Shortly after this land was transferred to a daughter and her husband--like many families their is a tradtion of native American heritage. As a 6 yr old my husband says he saw a picture of ancestors in stove pipe hats in front of tepee--not a single family member will admit to ever having seen this picture--there is a case of larcency involved in family momentos in a house rented to relatives, bibles pictures etc. turned up missing. When we asked renter she denied ever seeing anything and this is where he thought he saw it. Charles Children were Harriettb 1822 Al Lucretia b 1829 Al Lucinda b 1819 Al Thomas b 1824 Tn Mary James 1837 Nc Any information on these families will be appreciated. 3. I was wondering if any one had any thing they would like to send me that I can put on my 120 meg laser disk's that I may do lookups for people who ask questions off the list, there are some who dont want to be onna list, and its nice to have a vast amout of information to draw from, I am at present working on my web page, and the data base, I have to stay in the house to wait on my wife, so this the best time to get this done, I still have 3 unfinished pages to the list web site, I also have been offered a 100 meg web site for doing a little work, so I am ready to start organizing things ! I think each page should have a nice narative for each person represented !! It would be nice for us to work on them as a thread maybe, so we can add what we each know , that might enhance our own files, and draw more of our people to us also ! Norma you mentioned a few search engines awhile back that the web site came up as something else , I think it was the OLD name I had for it, I need to reenter the new name to the search engines and springboards, do you have any favorites you would like to share with me? I have an online job now, so I will be here more than not while I learn it, dont be supprised what time I may anser a message l;-0 Dan Matney
