BROADWATER researchers: Just yesterday I found some information, of which I was previously unaware, regarding Charles BROADWATER of Botetourt Co., VA. I don't know whether this is repetitive for some of you or not, but anyway, here it is: He was apprently living in Botetourt Co. as early as 1782, when he appears in Captain J. NEELLEY's "Company," (or tax district), as he does in 1783 and 1784 as well. The following 2 years ('85 & '86), he is on the list of R. NEELEY's Company. Then in 1787 he is taxed for the following, besides himself: No. of white males above 16 and under 21: 0 Blacks above 16: 0 Blacks under 16: 0 Horses, mares, colts & mules: 5 Cattle: 10 Robert Beverly rbeverly@csi.com Beverly Family Newsletter http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rbeverly/bfamnews.htm Beverly Query Page http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rbeverly/bevquery.htm

I have the book. It's over 50 pages. I'd be glad to copy it and mail it to you if you want to reimburse me. It costs 5 cents a copy at Staples, plus mailing. Let me know. Before you decide, however, I want to make sure that you know this is the family of Cornelius Broadwater. Most of them settled in western Maryland and West Virginia. Later on, some of them moved to Minnesota. I notice that most people are looking for Charles Broadwater that lived in the south. I know that Cornelius (born in the 1700s) had a brother Charles who moved south and was never heard from again. There are many, many, Charles Broadwater's. Again, the book I have is all of Cornelius' decendants. Let me know -- Sharon
Well, that sounds like my Henry! Especially since his first wife was Lyvia Ball and 3 of their children were Isaac, Albert, and Milton (my g-grandpa). Boy, he sure got around. Thanks for your info. I really, really appreciate it. Now I have some other states in which to start searching for Henry's parents and siblings. You missed a Charles Broadwater who settled at Scott Co, VA. We suspect he may be of the Cornelius B. line. Carol in WA
I know that there are many men with the name Charles Broadwater. I will tell you what I have. There was a Charles Broadwater (son of Cornelius and Mary Piper) born 4-22-1778 and died 8-5-1859. He married Mary Magdalene Beavers in Virginia in 1802. He left Loudoun County, Virginia and settled in western Allegany County (now Garrett County), Maryland in 1807. They had 12 children. The sixth child was also Charles C. born 1815 and died November 1897. He married Dorcas Duckworth first, then Mary Ellen Skidmore of Barton, Maryland. Then there is Charles who was the son of William Broadwater, Sr. and Rebecca Green. He was born 3-1-1815 and died 3-21-1891. He married Rosanna Myer. They had 3 children. I then have a Charles Pierce Broadwater (son of Jefferson and wife Mary Reckner) who was born 6-24-1852 and died 11-17-1942. He married Sarah Margaret Lowther from West Virginia. The next one I can find is the son of Peter and second wife Fannie Malone. This Charles was born in 1857 and died 5-1-1947. He married (1) Eliza J. Waggoner, Harrisville, WV, (2) Emily B. Patton, Harrisville area and (3) Elizabeth J. "Lizzie" Maxwell, Harrisville area. (This guy got around!). The next one is son of Ashford and Rachel M. Taylor. He is Charles Howard Broadwater, born about 1860 and died 8-22-1911. He married Josephine Willson, WV. In looking at what I have, most of the Charles' settled in western Maryland or West Virginia. If I can be of further help, let me know. I, too, am looking for a Charles who was a brother to Cornelius. Cornelius was born probably in the mid-1700s. Rumor has it that Cornelius' brother, Charles, moved south and was never heard from again.
I have a paper written by Wayne Bittinger in 1988 (over 50 pages) that is now out of print. This is what it says: Henry Broadwater was born September 19, 1818 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). On August 8, 1889, Henry Broadwater of Lonaconing, Maryland, married Adaline A. Metz. a 40-year old widow. Henry was living in Barton, Maryland, in April 1892. A veteran of both the Mexican War and the Civil War, he served in Missouri units in two separate enlistments. After the Civil War, he lived in Illinois until at least June of 1887. In January 1891, he was a resident of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Henry and his first wife had three sons: Isaac, Albert, and Milton. His first wife was Lizey Ball. There is also a Henry Broadwater that was born January 18, 1817 and died March 3, 1898. He was the son of William Broadwater, Sr. William Broadwater, Sr. was the son of Cornelius and Mary Piper. William married Rebecca Green who was born 7-31-1792 and died 10-18-1854. I don't think this is the Henry you're looking for. William's son Henry married Rachel Ogg.
There is a much better book by Wayne Bittinger (over 50 pages) written in 1988. It starts with Cornelius. It is out of print but is available in several libraries. One is the Ruth Enlo library in Grantsville, Maryland; the Fairfax County Historical Society in Fairfax, Virginia, and I think the Balch Library in Leesburg, Virginia also has it. I, too, have the Amos Broadwater paper, but the Bittinger work is all documented -- tells the whole family history and includes pictures. Sharon
Reference: "A Sketch of the Broadwater Family and It's Connections," by Amos Broadwater, 1891. Carol, Thank you for all the information you have provided on the Broadwater Family and the excerpts you gave from the referenced book. You said the book is available at the Genealogical Society of Allegany Co., MD, and I assume must be reviewed there. That's a long ways from AL, and too, I would love to have a copy of it. I am wondering if anyone has a copy and would reproduce it in its entirety for me. Of course, I will be more than happy to pay all costs involved in this request. Thank you, Sara Broadwater Taylor
Henry is my gg-grandfather and the oldest BROADWATER relative that I can identify. He was born abt 1823 in Virginia, according to the 1850 & 1860 census info. He married Lyvia Ball, born January 13, 1831 in Iowa, on August 15, 1850 in Bloomington, McClean Co., Illinois. He was in the war for several years, but don't know which side. The 1885 Nebraska census shows him as a border with the Theo Wilcox family (Henry left Lyvia and their children after 1880). That census also says that Henry was born in VA, and that his parents were born in VA too. That's all I have to go on. Can anybody help????
