On 1810 census for Botetourt Co., Charles BROADWATER appears with the following: 1 white male under 10, 1 wm 26-45, 1 wm 45 & over; 2 wf under 10, 2 wf 26-45, 1 wf 45 & over; 5 slaves. William had at least one brother and three sisters: John, b. 2/28/1788 Botetourt Co., VA; Martha, b. abt. 1782; Mary (Polly); Peggy. But judging from the census above, it is possible he may have had more siblings. William & John 1st appeared in Russell Co. It isn't a very long one. All I know about it is that Samuel Ervin was married to Emma Broadwater. She was born ca. 1856 in MS (according to the census) and died 25 Dec, 1935, probably in Copiah Co., MS. Samuel Ervin was born ca. 1849 in MS and ws buried in Copiah Co., MS (date unknown). This couple had a daughter, Cora Mae Ervin, who was born 9 May 1893 in Wilkinson Co., MS and died 14 August 1946 in Austin, Travis Co, TX. Any further information on this Broadwater line will be greatly appreciated. Carol- Thanks for the reply. Have only been on the Broadwater list since about August, so didn't see what you had in the spring. I really have nothing at all on Charles - do have a little more on his son John. Charles seems to have been a popular Broadwater name, which always adds to the confusion. Lots of info available on the descendants of Col. Charles Broadwater, but can't see where this fits in. Any info you have on this Charles B. will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Ellen
Dear E. Moore, Last spring I posted data on the Broadwaters at Scott Co, VA. Also some on those at Botetort, tho not much to it. Just that Charles Broadwater was at a certain location & mbr of the militia. Do you have this data. Where are you at with your research? I think our Broadwater Matney may tie to this line of Broadaters. Christy, Would love to find Broadwater Matney's full name. Tradition has it as Carrol Broadwater & son in OR was a Jr. There's no proof on this. Samuel King Matney known as Tuledad is another that came to mind. Our Matneys called him uncle. He was orphaned as a child & raised by an uncle in Overton Co, TN, then Shelby Co, IL. I think the Matneys of Shelby Co, IL are related to us. Since Broadwater Matney was born 1778-88 VA the link to Broadwater surname is earlier than that, prob in VA. Another tradition story was he was born at sea & Broadwater could have something to do with that, either as location of his birth or the Capt of the ship, or a relative. Can reasearch the entire bit, but I've kept my eye out & found nothig yet. He most certainly was related to those of Pittsylvania Co, VA early on & probably name was Mattingly, Mattenlee. He signed a petition in Campbell Co, TN 1813, I think, that was transcribed as Mattenbee. I'm very interested in Cully Farris Matheny. Why not post what you have on him for clues the rest of us can research. Good luck on your search.
