My husband's elderly aunt in Missouri also says the name like it were spelled "Broadus." Apparently that group kept the more "slurred" pronunciation. (Most noticeable when she is speaking of the plural form: Broad-us-es, instead of Broad-hursts.) So I think it is a possibility that at some point they were the same group.
