    3. I personally don't think it is rude. You never know. You might actually connect with someone who may have a link needed in your genealogy. I have had people call because they saw a Hopkins in the phone book and they are curious to know if we are related.     3. I think it is a great idea. I've done it many times when I'm traveling and in a strange city/town. I've had some wonderful conversations with people I've never met sharing my Broadhurst surname.
