Mary A(nn) TRACEY, 1845, Trinidad, is a definite connection. The 23rd is the right regiment, it was in Trinidad and Nova Scotia at the right time; and of course Elizabeth J. could be a sibling. Mary Ann Tracey m. James BROADHURST. At the time of the 1871 census in Halifax, N.S., James' daughter Mary E. Broadhurst, age 6, was living with James and Helen Tracey, apparently in the same neighborhood. We are speculating that James Tracey is the father of Mary Ann Tracey. Elizabeth J. is not shown as a resident of the Tracey household, but she would have been age 25 and presumably married by then. So I will pursue that angle in Nova Scotia, and hopefully there is an 1861 census that may show the family to confirm the right connections. In the meantime if you could tell me how to obtain the marriage certificate I would be most grateful. Many thanks. I have microfiche copies of the "Index of Regimental Births 1761-1924" which I bought from the Office of National Statistics in England. The index relates to chaplains returns of baptisms and is by no means comprehensive. The information in the index comes under the headings of: Name/ Christian Name/ Where born/ Year of Birth/ Regiment/ Volume/ Page So the following should be of interest to you: TRACEY/Mary A./ Trinidad/ 1845/ 23rd/ 1311/37 There is also a possible sibling: TRACEY/ Elizabeth J./ Antigua/ 1846/ 23rd/ 1311/39 That is all there is but ...... Certificates can be got from the overseas section of the General Register Office in England; if you want details on how to order, I can give you those. (I have discovered four generations of military in my family, so have learned about ordering up these things!). Only this week I placed an order for the Military Indexes, on microfiche, of Marriages and Deaths. It takes about two months for them to arrive, but if you have no information on the Tracey or Broadhurst marriages by then, they may be in these indexes. I also looked up Broadhurst in the Birth Index, but there are no births listed for the 17th Regiment. Hope that is of some help to you. Brendan Dublin, Ireland.
