I signed up with Family Tree DNA which has five Broadhurst family members in their database ... but no matches for me. Anyone else? She had a son out of wedlock, while living in the home of her parents, Stephen and Sarah Broadhurst, her son named Thomas Broadhurst. I think I might pursuit looking for the family of John, Margaret and James son, at least it gives me someone who may still me living or at least his family living. I often wondered what happened to Margaret after her mother Susannah married again, I know her stepfather William Duckworth died in Marple around 1887 but I struggled to find what had happened to Susannah after that. So there is a definite connection anyway between the Broadhurst husbands. Well thanks again I will definitely let you know if I have any further success, youve been a great help. Best wishes, Helen. Author: PaulineAdams12 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.broadhurst/280.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Helen At the moment It is not clear if your Broadhursts and mine are related, so, my cunning plan was to assemble as much information as I came across. In the hope that eventually the jig-saw can be put together. With so many brothers naming their sons after fathers and brothers, it is as you can imagine , very complicated. However, I have acheived some success, albeit only a small progression has been made. Margaret Greenwood married James Broadhurst 25 Dec 1890 he was from New Mills occupation labourer father John deceased wheelwright. Margaret b 1869c father was shown as William Greenwood deceased occupation labourer. Witnesses were John and Mary Jane Broadhurst Source St Georges Church Parish records Disley 1891 Census shows James and Margaret living at 63 Highfield Vine New Mills. Living next door as unmarried boarders were John and Susannah. 1901 Census shows them living at (I think it reads ) Brinting Vale Glossop . James was a Calico Printer and engraver. Here is the good part , living with them was their son John age 4 born Dinting Derbyshire . Armed with this information you can perhaps move a little further. Have you thought of contacting a local newspaper , to see if there are any relatives of John living in the area. Please let me know how you get on, I would love to hear. Who knows, there may be other Hope Valley Broadhursts out there who can clear up other New Mills mysteries. I have been trying to find out what happened to my great grandmas family and I have details for Susannah who lived in MArple for a time with her first husband but not much after that. Do you know what may have become of Susannahs daughter Margaret? She was born in Marple I dont know who her father was as she kept the Greenwood name (sussanahs maiden name) so I presume Susannah had her out of marriage. I think she may have married a Broadhurst ironically I don't know whether it was another branch of your family, Margaret was born around 1880 I have a feeling her hubby may have been James? Many thanks, Helen. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My particular interest is in determining whether the descendants of William Broadhurst of Philadelphia, Ohio and Michigan are connected to the William Broadhurst of Ashby de la Zouch, England. There is a possibility that these two William Broadhursts are actually the same person. After research and recommendations I think the most useful testing organization and specific test are from Family Tree DNA, whose website is: http://www.familytreedna.com There is a lot of information on their website about various tests and their uses. The test we need most urgently is the Paternal Y-chromosome test, which is described in part as: The Paternal DNA, passed from father to son, tests the Y-chromosome, which is only found in males and is useful in verifying common ancestry. A single test allows you to verify: - if 2 males are possibly related, your suggested geographic origin and your paternal deep ancestral ethnic origin We urgently need a male volunteer who is a direct line Broadhurst male descended from the dozens of possibilities in the PA-OH-MI Broadhurst line. We will be able to get the test done for $US99 each [rather than the $149 listed on the site.] That may sound expensive but many of us spend much more than that on data, documents, research, travel, etc., and this has the potential to be the largest single useful piece of information we have available. Additionally it would be useful to have other male Broadhursts around the world were tested to answer the question as to whether any of the other Broadhurst lines are interrelated.
