Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone ever stumbled onto the Ellis Island Site. I was pleasantly suprised. We came on there too. I participated; got the kit, took the swab, waited for results and while the process was interesting it didn't yield any "aha!" or "eureka!" moments. Not that I was expecting any really. It did confirm however much of what I already knew of general family origins. But I'm curious if anyone else participating found any genetic "matches"? Perhaps something that could help others? My grandfather emigrated from Nova Scotia, and his father from ADLZ (but as a soldier)... so the mill connection is there but not because they moved from ENG to MA for that purpose. Others wander about all over the world, my Broadhursts seem to have this wanderlust, this ambition for a better life which spurred them on. My Broadhursts (that is the ones I have traced so far started off in Derbyshire/Cheshire 18th Century working in the bleach mill and calico works, moving out off the countryside to the towns (Oldham/Ashton ) and to the Cities (Manchester) into the mills some stayed until the beginning of the 20th Century. Whilst others moved to Indiana in the 1830's Australia in the early 1900's and one who went gold mining in Alaska. Fantastic stuff, better than fiction any day. It's been quiet on the BROADHURST message board for a while now so I have what I hope is an easy query. Many Broadhurst family members emigrated from the mills in and around Lancashire, England in the early twentieth century to those around Utica, New York, Lowell, Massachusetts and Dover, New Hampshire. Some of the family names include; ADAMS, BRADSHAW, BROADHURST, CROSSLEY, DAVIS, HOWARTH, and WOODWARD. My question is this: are any of you "cousins" out there? Have you ever seen probate/will records for John Broadhurst or Mary Eunecy Turner Broadhurst? My GG Grandmother was Ellender Broadhurst b. 1815 TN. Ellender married Solomon Fletcher on 9 Jan 1834 in Ray County, MO. Henry Broadhurst is found nearby on the early census records 1830, if I remember correctly. Henry is probably her brother based on birth years. I strongly believe that John and Mary are my Ellender's parents and was wondering if you have ever seen her name? I am pretty positive that I am on the right track as I have a few real good clues that possibly connect her to them but since I don't have records easily accessible thought you might be able to point me in the right direction? I love those old tin types. They are so wonderful. It's a shame that they don't have the names connected to them. Have you posted them on the World Family Tree yet if people can see them they may be able to place the face with a name. I am trying to find proof that Sarah M. Broadhurst, that married James Daniel Maddox is the Daughter of Moses Broadhurst and Jane Rickman. Through all my research I can only find one Sarah Broadhurst that matches the age needed for the marriage of James and wife Sarah M. Broadhurst and that research shows the daughter of Moses but there is no middle initial in her name on the 1860 census to make that final proof. That is the only time I can find her on a census. I know James wife Sarah died sometime before 1876 when he married his second wife, Virginia Sylvania Broadhurst. So, am looking for someone that may have the information to share proving that Sarah, daughter of Moses is the same Sarah M. Broadhurst that married James Daniel Maddox. I think it is a great idea. I've done it many times when I'm traveling and in a strange city/town. I've had some wonderful conversations with people I've never met sharing my Broadhurst surname. I don't really think there are that many of us in this country so I take advantage of every opportunity to learn about other Broadhurst.
