    1. [BRITISH-VIRGIN-ISLANDS] Roll Call
    2. Happy New Year, Laura and the rest of you. Unfortunately, this list has resembled a ghost town for some time. The Caribbean List has also lacked much input on BVI family history for the last few months. How about a roll call of interests? . I continue to monitor local funeral booklets, obituaries published online by the (US)VI Daily News <http://virginislandsdailynews.com/obituaries>, etc for references to members of the PENN family, supplemented by calling directly on the encyclopaedic knowledge of survivors (especially my wife). Very recent BVI publications include "Methodism: 200 Years of Witness 1810-2010", edited by Verna Penn Moll and Jenny N Wheatley: celebrating the history of the church at East End, Tortola; and a beautifully illustrated "2011 Calendar: Virgin Islands Architecture", from the Friends of the National Archives. They were preceded in 2010 by "Snapshots of the Past: Selections From the Old Pictures Exhibition, 2007", edited by V Penn Moll for the Virgin Islands National Archives. One unexpected opportunity I had to defer, was an offer to be shown around the plantation era section of the graveyard at St Paul's Anglican/ Episcopal Church in Sea Cow(s) Bay, Tortola. I am also having to transfer from my to-do list for 2010 a return to a closed graveyard of the same period in Johnson's Ghut, on the outskirts of Road Town. We are hosting our annual New Year's get together for a few relatives and friends this evening, which may allow me to gently prod a few memories. What have you all been doing in 2010 and would like to find in 2011? 1. [BRITISH-VIRGIN-ISLANDS] CHILDRESS SURNAME IN THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
    2. Hi, I am searching for the CHILDRESS and any variation, in the Caribbean Islands, namely the British Virgin Islands. Most interested in the ones who lived there in the early to late 1920s. Any hint or other guidance is greatly appreciated. If the records of this time are not in the British Virgin Islands, does anyone know where I could look otherwise. Thank you in advance for anything helpful. Kay

    3. Hi Jeanie I have not traced Simon Miller's death in England, but found the Census data below from a free search on http://www.ancestry.com/ for Simon Miller born abt 1851 in England. You can also check the relevance of other results from this search, including data drawn from "England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: 1837-1983" , " </cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=+Simon+&gsln=MILLER&=%2c%2c%2c&gsby=1851&gsb2co=3251%2cEngland&gsb2pl=1%2cAll+Counties&gsdy=&gsd2co=1%2cAll+Countries&gsd2pl=1%2c+&sbo=0&sbor=&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-b&pcat=ROOT_CATEGORY&recid=39634786&recoff=1+2&db=FreeBMDBirth&indiv=1>New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957", etc. <javascript:go7488_51342168()> Googling "Durham genealogy" reveals numerous other sources which may help you. John Joseph Scatliffe married Amanda Elnora Hodge in 1899. They were my great grandparents. John Joseph Scatliffe was born in 1856. The Road Town Methodist Church lists a baptism record of an Agustus Martin, born to an Amelia Scatliffe in 1831. The BVI National Parks trust states that in 1872 "John Dawson and Simon Scatliffe bought the Mount Healthy Windmill from Augustus McClevity . . ." But I can find no other records in Tortola - huricanes, of 1819 and 1824, and fire, in 1853 that burned Road Town, destroyed early records ... 2. Kylie Veale
    3. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Names and email addresses will be protected and are therefore not included in the publication. Copies of the paper will be made available to interested participants on request, after the book has been published. ----------------------------------------------- Kylie J.
