    3. Dear Genners, Further to what Jackye has written, I looked at a birth certificate I have for my earliest English-born relative, my great, great grandmother, Rachel PINKUS who was born in London in 1847. The certificate DOES indeed state the maiden name of the mother (in this case Harris). This should not be confused with the mother's maiden name being included in the Birth INDEX, beginning with September 1911. (Gee, what took them so long!) That said, in Anthony's case, as Elizabeth was born in 1800 and probably married some twenty years later. She would have been having children well before civil registration began. Hence, as Jackye suggested, following the children as they grew up, married, died, etc, may provide clues as to the mother's maiden name. Have you followed the husband? Was there any probate filed? Was any of her family mentioned as beneficiaries? What about the burial location, maybe her family was buried nearby? Good luck with your research.
