The couple married came from Dover (bride)and Reading (groom) respectively and they made their home at Reading. The ceremony was conducted ‘according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the German and Polish Jews’ by the Chief Rabbi, Nathan Adler. (I have the brother of the groom also marrying at 21 Finsbury Square in 1859.) >From what I can gather this was the address of the London School of Jewish Studies; which had opened the previous year. The witnesses were Isaac Myers and Morris Lyons. Were they possibly students of the School? Can anyone explain why the couple would have chosen to marry there, and not at the Synagogue? Was this a cheaper option, especially if the wedding was small and not attended by many family? Or would they only be allowed to marry at their ‘home’ Synagogue?
