Hello people, I'm in need of your collective intelligence. I have one Nathan LAZARUS, born in Exeter, Devon, about 1826 (not to be confused with his cousin of that name, born about 1849). Nathan was in Exeter at the time of the 1841 census. In 1853 he married another cousin, Fanny Lazarus, in Plymouth, Devon. By the time of the 1861 census they were in Toronto, Canada. At the time of the marriage, the Plymouth Hebrew Marriage Register has Nathan as "Gentleman, London", while a newspaper announcement refers to him as "of the United States". Apart from the wedding itself, I haven't been able to find Nathan anywhere between 1841 and 1861, in England on the States. I've tried the English census, looking for Nathan, born Devon. I've tried Nathan La**s - somewhere (I'm now confused about what I've searched!) I've tried the Ellis Island site and it insists that no Lazarus born that early came through there (which is rubbish, I'm sure - I must be doing something wrong). I'd really like to find out where Nathan was because I'm researching the Lazarus family's worldwide involvement in the optical trade and he was one of the first to go into it. Eve
Given that he marries in 1853 and he is "of the US" by then, perhaps he is on a ship to the US at the time of the 1851 census? Have you got him in any passenger lists?
