    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] dowries

    3. I've been reading about German Jews, particularly about arranged marriages in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Apparently dowries were a very important part of the marriage settlement - sometimes, it seems, more important than the bride. I understand that my grandmother's marriage in London in 1916 was arranged, but I can find no information about marriage and dowry practices among British Jews, and I would really like to. Does anyone know of any such information? Does anyone have personal information about dowry practices in the 19th and 20th centuries (among Jews who had been in England for several generations)?
