Hi Eve, The two born 1817 & living in Stoke Damerel, were born in Plymouth & Blatey. There are two listed as born 1819, but their birthplaces are listed as St Just & Arley. Not much help to you, sadly. My earliest info on him is from his marriage to Nancy Lazarus in London in 1856, when he is an Oxford jeweler. They appear in the 1861 census in Oxford and his place of birth is given as Mallaua, Poland, which I tentatively interpret as Mlawa, Poland. I have no idea when Joseph came to England. A certain big genealogy site lists two Joseph Marks, born about 1817, residing in Devon (Nancy was from Exeter) in the 1851 census. I'd like to know if either were born in Poland, or indeed if there is any Joseph Marks born circa 1819 in Poland in the 1851 census. If some kind soul would check these for me - I'm sure I have in the past, but I'd like to recheck them - I'd be very grateful. Joseph doesn't seem to have been naturalized, so no joy there. In the 1881 census for Birmingham and in 1890 in London, according to his death certificate, he was a Hebrew teacher, but I haven't been able to find out where. Any fresh thoughts most welcome.
