Jeremy, forgive me if I've missed something (I haven't been following this thread very well) but - have you tried CONTACTING the person with a tree "on the big A site" and asking the owner about their information and connections? You know, sometimes people "just accept information that looks probable" - I've been guilty of that myself! - but sometimes it turns out they have real first-hand knowledge, and if you ask them nicely they're usually very willing to share.
