    1. [BRITISH-JEWRY] Solomon Family of St Helena murder???

    3. Thanks to the very helpful link about Trove, I found an answer to a story I have been wondering about for a while. My Gx2 grandfather's niece (close I know!) married Henry Solomon, formerly Magnus. I was curious about this in the beginning, but discovered part of the story on that website nobody mentions. It seems the family moved to Australia in about 1852. They have another child, Saul and then in 1855, father Samuel is accused of murdering his wife, Miriam Issacs and half the children return to the UK, including Henry. They then start using the name Solomon(s) instead of Magnus. On the Trove website the story is covered extensively. It seems Samuel was accused of poisoning Miriam, who did die of poisoning. However, he was found not guilty. But it gives one other clue "the deceased was one of the daughters of the wealthy and influential merchant of St Helena, Mr Saul Solomon" So I assume this means that Miriam is Saul's daughter Miriam born 8 July 1808 on St Helena. Which means that Issacs is her name from a previous marriage? Anyone have any clues? I'd suspect the marriage was in Chatham. (Her birth was given as Chatham on the census in the UK) Many thanks for any help. Becca (In rain stricken Scotland, so cold we don't have to worry about the midgies.)

    3. If you can get into Ancestry.co.uk you will find Magnus( Chatham) and Russell( Sheerness) families - with all sorts of ramifications into other families all with frequent Jewish last names. The Navy needed supplies and there were traders at all the ports.
