Hi I have been wondering whether my ancestors would have made announcements of their births marriages and deaths in the Jewish Chronicle. They were members of the Great Synagogue in London in the 1840's and some but not all of their records were registered there. Could anyone tell me what information is contained/available in publications such as the Jewish Chronicle and how this is accessed. I would be very interested to learn what others have been able to glean from this. Regards Angela Wilkinson OTLEY, ENGLAND MYERS, Poland ISAACS, London
Hello Angela, On http://www.british-jewry.org.uk/Resource%20List.htm you'll find a link to and short explanation of the JC and what it contains. You normally had to be a certain class to announce in there. It cost quite a lot and so it wasn't your "everyday folk" who announced. It's interesting to see that as families became more settled and got more financially secure they started to announce.
