Dear Genners, As the new semester at the university has begun, so has my monthly ritual to inspect the offerings on the New Book shelf and see if there is something of genealogical interest. I was not to be disappointed as there is a hefty offering (630 pages) entitled Canada's Jews: A People's Journey, by Gerald Tulchinsky. It was published by the University of Toronto in 2008. The ISBN is 978-0-8020-9062-1 (cloth). Tulchinsky divides the history into four parts: 1768-1890; 1890-1919; 1919-1939; and 1940-2008.. The author was born in Canada in 1933 and so he has experienced growing up Jewish personally. There is only one table: one that depicts the Jewish population in selected cities from 1891 to 2001. There are also two inserted section of black and white photographs. Looking at the index pages, there are quite a number of names listed, but these are probably folks who were more than likely the movers and shakers as opposed to being our ancestors, though no doubt someone can claim them. As most of the library books lack a dustjacket, I was not able to read of Tulchinsky's credentials, but the publisher's web site describes him as a professor emeritus in the Department of History at Queen's University. -- Jeremy G Frankel ex Edgware, London, England Berkeley, California, USA EBIN: Russia, New York, USA FRANKEL: Poland, London, England GOLDRATH/GOLD: Praszka, Poland, London, England KOENIGSBERG: Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, London, England, NYC, NY, USA LEVY (later LEADER): Kalisz, Poland, London, England PRINCZ/PRINCE: Krakow, Poland, London, England, NYC, NY, USA
