Dear All I am trying to find a Joseph NATHAN who I beleive maybe the father of Louisa NATHAN. I can not find him on any census with family and in 1841 and 1851 his possible wife and daughter/s are living next door to her father and on the 1851 she is down as married. I can not find a death of a Joseph NATHAN but I have found the court case and transportation in 1838 of a Joseph NATHAN who was sent to Australia, living around the right area. I know this is not just a Jewish problem but can anyone tell me if a husband get transported to Australia and doesn't come back can the wife declare him dead and re-marry under Jewish Law or even English Law. His possible wife never re-married but I have found a marriage for a Joseph NATHAN in Tasmania that fits after 1851. I suspect but I don't know that free convicts didn't have to prove that they left their wife behind but I don't know that. Does anyone have any knowledge of these situation specially in regards to the Jewish Law. Thanks Debbie Bozkurt Outer Hebrides
