Dear Genners, I don't think anyone has carried out a specific study, but I don't think anyone would have been posting notices in the 1840s in the Jewish Chronicle as it didn't begin publication until 1851. That said, there were very few BMD entries in the first 30-35 years of publication. It really begins to pick up around the 1890s and then around 1900 we see the JC featuring BMD notices on the first two then three pages of the newspaper. Currently in London but leaving early Wednesday morning. -- Jeremy G Frankel ex Edgware, London, England Berkeley, California, USA EBIN: Russia, New York, USA FRANKEL: Poland, London, England GOLDRATH/GOLD: Praszka, Poland, London, England KOENIGSBERG: Vilkaviskis, Lithuania, London, England, NYC, NY, USA LEVY (later LEADER): Kalisz, Poland, London, England PRINCZ/PRINCE: Krakow, Poland, London, England, NYC, NY, USA
THe JC began publication in 1841 (under a different name initially) and the on-line archives go back to this date. To see the sort of thing contained, go to www.thejc.com archives section and do a search. Without a subscription, you can still see which editions contain the word you are looking for (although the OCR tool is far from perfect, perhaps due to the type-face used for the paper?). What you see is an extract of the article/announcement, but it can be misleading as it will show phrases which are not necessarily consecutive on the actual page. With a subscription, as well as seeing the complete pages, you can also send links to pages to other people, so that they can see the page too, if they have the appropriate Adobe reader. I find it a fantastic resource, and good value, as I used to buy the JC every week from my newsagent anyway, and it actually works out cheaper with the subscription! It's more expensive overseas though. If you want a subscription but are not interested in receiving a copy of the weekly paper, you can nominate for it to be sent elsewhere I believe, eg a local old age home.
