Dear Genners, although I have been able to make progress laterally and descendently ( is there such a word?), I am still stuck with Joseph Abendana (Joseph de Moseh Bendahan) married to Esther Rodrigues Ribeiro and cannot go beyond Joseph. No amount of sideways searching can tell me who Joseph was and where he came from or if, as my great uncle S.RAbendana wrote in the Jewish Chronicle, in 1850, he was the grandson of the scholar Isaac Abendana of Oxford and Cambridge ( brother the Haham Jacob). In the Bevis Marks records there is a Joseph Abendana who was a Rubi, a kind of teacher at the Jewish school, but I don't know if he is the same person. I have not yet searched beyond England, but the alternative name of Abendana and sometimes Bendahan could give some clues. The natural place would be Holland, Hamburg or Spain and Portugal as I know that the Abendanas were Marranos, but I cant make an immediate link within England. Has anyone any suggestions? Dear Louise, A large number of Abendana are listed by Michael Halevy in his book on the Sefardic cimmunity in Hamburg. I can't find a Joseph b. Moseh but there are several other Josephs the earliest of whom died in 1662 and was the son of Daniel b. Joseph Abendana. Another Joseph Abendana died in 1671 and three sons; David, Jacob who died (childless) in London in 1696 and Isaac who died in London in 1695. I have the book and if it would help I could look up any entries that might be relevant to you.
